IT Home, July 18 news: According to a report yesterday by the Wall Street Journal citing people familiar with the matter, Elon Musk’s SpaceX is in talks with the U.S. Pentagon and plans to provide it with billions of dollars worth of data-center computing power to run AI large models.
If this agreement is ultimately reached, the cooperation relationship between SpaceX and the U.S. Department of Defense will be further deepened. The company currently maintains important partnerships with the U.S. Department of Defense in areas such as rocket launches and missile tracking.
It is understood that SpaceX employees are still internally discussing the idea of competing with companies such as CoreWeave and Neocloud and winning market share by selling computing power to AI customers at lower prices.
Like many large organizations, the U.S. Department of Defense is also seeking more cloud computing resources to support its intelligence agencies and AI applications. Late last year, Amazon said that its AWS cloud computing services would invest up to $50 billion (IT Home note: at the current exchange rate, about RMB 339.017 billion) to provide AI supercomputing infrastructure to U.S. government agencies.
However, talks between SpaceX and the Pentagon are still ongoing, and the agreement mentioned above may not be reached. As of the time of publication, neither side had immediately responded to a request for comment.
