Epoch-making new competition format (48 teams expanded, largest scale in history)
1. Participating teams: increased from 32 to 48, divided into 12 groups, with 4 teams per group
2. Qualification rules: top 2 teams from each group + 8 best third-place teams from groups, for a total of 32 teams advancing to the knockout stage
3. Match schedule: 104 matches in total (the previous edition had only 64), with the addition of a round of 16 stage
4. Difficulty of winning: the champion team must play all 8 matches—one more knockout round than the 32-team era—testing squad depth and endurance
5. New teams make their debut: Cape Verde, Curaçao, and others
