According to CNBC, the United States carried out airstrikes on Iran for the third consecutive night under orders from President Donald Trump, after Iranian missiles hit two UAE oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting air-raid sirens across the Gulf.
The U.S. Central Command said these strikes will continue to inflict losses on Iranian forces and limit Tehran’s ability to attack ships in the strait.
The action came after Trump ordered the reimposition of sanctions on Iran in the waterway on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and proposed imposing a 20% fee on ships transiting the strait.
The UAE Ministry of Defense said the oil tankers “Mombasa” and “Al Bahiya” were hit by two Iranian missiles in the southern part of the strait, within Oman’s territorial waters, resulting in the death of one Indian crew member and injuries to eight others, while Bahrain sounded missile alert sirens.
Kpler reported that confirmed transits through the Strait of Hormuz fell by about 52% week-on-week during the period from July 10 to 12, while Lloyd’s List Intelligence expected a sharp rise in war-risk premiums as shipowners and charterers paused from making transit decisions. Brent crude rose by 2% to $85 per barrel on Tuesday.
