At 3 a.m., I’m staring at a gas tracker, and my third Americano has gone cold.

Most people haven’t truly thought through what “verifiable AI” on-chain actually means. It’s not a story—it’s cost.

In the document @OpenGradient there’s a set of numbers: ZK verification per single inference is 200k to 500k gas. On Base, each time you produce proof that “the output wasn’t tampered with,” you have to pay an extra few cents to over a dozen cents.

On-chain AI narratives have been overhyped to death this year. Most projects just wrap a layer of smart contracts around Web2 APIs; inference runs inside a black box, and once a hash is posted on-chain, they dare to call it “cryptographically verifiable.” OpenGradient’s HACA architecture is layered—small detail to some, but a big deal for developers who genuinely need audit trails.

But I won’t pretend this is something without hard flaws.

Over the past two-plus months since the TGE, the real problem is the token structure hiding behind the whitepaper. Circulating supply is about 190 million, and there are another 348 million queued for unlock in the ecosystem pool. The foundation releases a steady 2 million-plus each month. By next April, the 250 million units held by core contributors and investors begin entering linearly—which means that starting in spring 2027, nearly 15 million new OPG will flow into the market every month.

Buying in is easy, but every month after that, there are people selling. Once you go through the unlock schedule, you finally feel what people mean by a “supply flood.”

More importantly, out of 2 million+ inference calls, how many are truly full-verified ZKML? How many are just TEE attestations? How many are basically a Vanilla signature scheme—zero verification overhead. If most inferences are done at the lowest tier just to save gas, then “verifiable AI” is just a marketing shell.

The relationship between OPG and the network’s actual inference demand is still unclear. This is a tracking signal, not a reason to place a bet.

The only thing truly worth watching is this: in the next quarterly data update, whether network inference call volume shows organic growth that’s decoupled from the token unlock schedule—rather than fake prosperity manufactured by incentives.
