Philippe Laffont, founder of Coatue Management, stated that artificial intelligence (AI) and space currently present clearer investment opportunities than Bitcoin (BTC). He admitted to CNBC that he's starting to feel uncertain about how to think of this asset.

This billionaire investor argues that choosing companies with a future valuation of $10 trillion is easier than predicting the direction of Bitcoin. He believes that the discussions around that are more fixable than the long-term role of Bitcoin.

The reason Coatue’s founder has started to distance himself from Bitcoin

Laffont founded Coatue in 1999 after being trained by Julian Robertson at Tiger Management. That background makes his more detached viewpoint even more credible.

In an interview with CNBC, he said that in the past, having fewer new IPOs meant risky investment funds would flow into Bitcoin. But now the situation has changed, because more new markets are coming online. And fast-growing stablecoin payments have become a new option for investors looking for risk.

This is a crucial moment. Bitcoin is trading near $60,000—about half of the high near $126,000—while the value of AI and space is surging.

I don’t know what to think about Bitcoin anymore, Philippe Laffont said in this interview.

For companies worth $10 trillion

Laffont’s math is easy to understand. He says that the global market value could grow from about $120 trillion to $200 trillion. If one company holds a 5% stake, it would be valued at $10 trillion.

Now contenders are starting to emerge. Nvidia (NVDA), the chipmaker with a crucial role in AI, is valued at nearly $5 trillion. SpaceX has set the highest-ever IPO price—$177 billion this month—and the shares are up 19% since the first day of trading.

Anthropic, a private company, is valued at $965 billion, and OpenAI is valued at $852 billion—each of which is nearing the approximate $1.2 trillion value of all of Bitcoin combined.

This isn’t just empty talk. Coatue and his brother Thomas jointly led the previous $38 billion fundraising round for Anthropic, and they also participated in the latest round. This fund is also backing OpenAI.

These views continue to resonate as Wall Street debates where the money will go next. Some buyers still insist that Bitcoin is still too small for institutional investors.

Not everyone agrees with this caution. BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, still recommends allocating only a small amount to Bitcoin to diversify risk.

The question that remains is whether Bitcoin can keep its value edge as money flows into AI and space. At this time, Laffont says he still wants to bet on other options more than that.
