👥 False Consensus Effect — When you're bullish, you feel like the whole world should be bullish.
🎭 False Consensus Effect — 'Everyone thinks this way' is often just your misconception, not the reality.

💡 A quick wake-up call | Let me break it down for you
The False Consensus Effect is when you overestimate how many people share your views. If you’re bullish on BTC, you think, 'most people are bullish too'; if you’re bottom-fishing, you believe 'smart money is also buying the dip.' You think you represent the 'mainstream,' but it’s just your illusion.
In trading, this illusion is dangerous. You may let your guard down because 'everyone thinks this way' and believe 'so many are bullish, it can't dip'. When the market reverses, you realize — the 'everyone' you thought was just you.
🎧 Listen to the pain of veteran traders | Real trading disaster scenes
'Once, I was in a group where eight out of ten people were bullish on ETH. I thought: 'So many people are bullish, it should be safe.' So, I went in heavy. Result? ETH plummeted, and the group was in uproar. I privately messaged a few group members and found out they hadn’t even opened a position; they were just talking.'
What I thought was 'consensus' was actually just a few people chatting casually. I concocted the world's attitude from my own thoughts.
This is the false consensus effect — you project your viewpoint onto others and then think 'everyone is the same'. You become the 'majority' in your own illusion.
⚠️ How is this thing going to screw you? | Three deadly traps
It makes you overconfident: you think 'everyone thinks this way, it can't be wrong', so you increase your position and loosen your stop-loss, risking control until you wake up when liquidation hits.
It makes you ignore opposing voices: you only focus on people who share your views, automatically filtering out differing opinions, thickening your information cocoon, and drifting further from the truth.
It can lead you to be trapped by the 'silent majority': those with real big money, smart money, often stay quiet. What you think is 'consensus' is just retail noise, while the big players have long vanished.
It leads you to catch the top: at the end of a bull market, when everyone around you is bullish, you think 'everyone is bullish, it can't drop'. When you jump in, you become the last bag holder, standing guard forever.
🔧 What to do? | Three tips to help you control your hands
Actively seek out the 'opposition'
Every time you have a strong opinion, force yourself to search for opposing views. If you're bullish on BTC, look for 'reasons to be bearish on BTC'.List out the opposing viewpoints and read them carefully. If after reading you still think your opinion holds, that's true consensus. Don't just live in the like zone.Use data instead of feelings
Don't ask 'what does everyone think', ask 'what does the data say'. For example: open interest, funding rates, long-short ratios, on-chain data.Use objective indicators instead of subjective feelings.Data doesn't lie, but your brain will — and it will make you feel very comfortable doing so.Set up a 'reverse thinking' rule
When you think 'everyone is bullish', force yourself to ask:'If everyone is bullish, who is selling? Are the big players already offloading their positions?'Then at least cut your position in half, or set a tighter stop-loss. Don't stand with 'everyone you think' — they might just be air.
🧘 Take 30 seconds to calm down | Don't let your imagination deceive you
When the thought 'everyone thinks this way, it can't be wrong' pops into your head —
Close your eyes, take a deep breath. Silently say to yourself:
'The 'everyone' I thought of might just be me. Find three opposing opinions before you proceed.'
Then open your eyes and search for opposing viewpoints.
📝 Remember this line | Etch it in your brain
What you think is consensus is often just your own echo. True consensus is hidden in the data, not in your brain.
