I was going through the OpenGradient developer docs and one line genuinely stopped me.
Per official developer documentation as of June 2026, the verification mode is set to Vanilla unless a developer actively changes it.
The architecture docs define this as signature verification only, with no proof of correct execution. Both TEE and ZKML exist as options. Vanilla is simply what runs if nothing is selected.
The docs explain why and they are honest about it. ZKML adds 1000x to 10000x computational overhead, completely impractical for large models. TEE covers most production scenarios. The spectrum exists for a legitimate technical reason and I understand that.
What I cannot find anywhere is what developers are actually choosing.
OpenGradient Foundation reported 2M+ inferences processed as of April 2026.
No public breakdown exists of how many ran TEE, how many ran ZKML, and how many ran on Vanilla with no verifiable proof of correct execution.
That split is the only number that would tell me what this network actually is in practice, not what the official docs says it can be.
The design choice makes technical sense to me, the tradeoff is real.
