The electronics giant Sony plans a revolutionary step that could change the gaming industry forever: in 2026, a US Dollar stablecoin is set to be introduced as a payment method in the PlayStation Store โ€“ and that before Grand Theft Auto VI is released. What sounds like a marketing gimmick could be the starting signal for a crypto-revolution in the gaming sector.

Sony plans to issue a stablecoin pegged to the US Dollar in 2026, which will be used for purchases of PlayStation games, subscriptions, and anime content, Nikkei Asia reported citing insider sources. The decision follows months of preparation and strategic partnerships in the crypto sector.

Sony Bank partners with Bastion for stablecoin infrastructure

Already in October, Sony Bank, the financial arm of the corporation, applied for a national trust bank license in the USA from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). Sony would use the trust bank to issue a dollar-pegged stablecoin and manage the associated reserves.

The technical foundation is provided by a partnership with the stablecoin company Bastion, whose infrastructure will support the new token. Sony's venture arm also participated in Bastion's $14.6 million funding round led by Coinbase Ventures. This strategic investment underscores Sony's serious commitment to the crypto space.

USA in focus: 30 percent of revenue at stake

The strategy initially targets the US market, which is of enormous importance to Sony. The stablecoin is aimed at US customers, who account for about 30 percent of the Sony Group's external sales. The token is intended to serve as an additional payment option alongside credit cards and PayPal, expanding the existing offerings rather than replacing them.

The motives are not only innovative but also economically savvy: By issuing its own stablecoins, Sony can save billions of dollars in fees that would otherwise go to banks or payment service providers like Visa and Mastercard. By integrating its own dollar-backed token, Sony could lower card processing fees, optimize cross-border treasury management, and retain users within its ecosystem.

Soneium: Sony's own Layer-2 blockchain as a technical foundation

What many overlook: Sony has not only stablecoin plans but has already built a complete blockchain infrastructure. Sony launched the public Soneium Layer-2 blockchain on January 14, 2025, an Ethereum-compatible network that serves as public infrastructure.

Soneium could provide the technical foundation for stablecoin settlement and demonstrates that Sony is not reliant on external infrastructure. Soneium will connect blockchain technology (Web3) with everyday internet services (Web2) and make things easier for users.

BlockBloom: Sony's vision for the Web3 future

The stablecoin plans are just one part of a broader Web3 strategy. Sony Bank established a dedicated Web3 subsidiary in June, which was later renamed BlockBloom.

Sony Bank stated in a statement in May: "Digital assets utilizing blockchain technology will be integrated into a variety of services and business models."

The goal is ambitious: BlockBloom aims to create a world where "fans and artists, digital and physical experiences, as well as fiat currencies and digital assets are seamlessly connected." This vision goes far beyond simple payment processing and could revolutionize NFTs, in-game assets, and creator economies.

More than just gaming: Crunchyroll and the anime ecosystem

The stablecoin is not only intended for use in the PlayStation Store. The proposed coin will drive payments for video games and anime content within the Sony ecosystem, including the PlayStation Store and Crunchyroll.

Crunchyroll is the world's largest anime streaming service and belongs to Sony. The integration of the stablecoin could enable new monetization models for content creators. Sony could introduce stablecoin payouts for third-party studios distributing content through the PlayStation Store, providing faster settlement for creators and developers.

Institutional stablecoin wave is rolling in

Sony is following an active trend: More and more institutional players have been experimenting with stablecoins since this year. From payment giants to entertainment corporations, companies recognize the potential to reduce fees and regain control over their payment infrastructure.

The regulatory landscape is evolving in parallel. The stablecoin launch is planned for the fiscal year 2026, but the final decision rests with US regulators who must assess whether Sony's model meets security and consumer protection requirements.

Race against time: Will the stablecoin go live before GTA VI?

Grand Theft Auto VI is regarded as one of the most anticipated games of all time. Rockstar Games has not officially confirmed the release date, but insiders expect it to be 2025 or 2026. If Sony indeed launches its stablecoin in fiscal year 2026 (which runs until March 2027), it could be a close race.

The symbolic significance would be enormous: A stablecoin launching before perhaps the biggest gaming release of the decade would cement Sony's position as an innovative market leader and could force other gaming platforms to follow suit.

The question is no longer whether crypto payments will enter the gaming mainstream - but when. And Sony seems determined to be among the first to shape this future.
