▪Group polarization — the frenzy in a group often becomes the graveyard of your account.

📖 This episode’s term: Group Polarization
🎯 Difficulty: ⭐⭐ (advanced beginner)
🔥 Emotional Danger Index: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 (Level 4)

❓ One-sentence definition | Plain-language explanation

Have you noticed that when a group of people with similar views gathers to discuss something, everyone’s opinions end up becoming even more extreme? This is the phenomenon of group polarization. Those who are bullish become even more convinced of a bull market after talking, while those who are bearish become even more panicked about a bear market.

In a trading community, you might originally be only “slightly bullish,” but after hearing analysis from a group of equally bullish people, you suddenly want to “go all in.” In reality, you weren’t persuaded by logic; you were pushed toward the extreme by the emotional resonance of the crowd. And the market often reverses in moments of extreme sentiment.

🎭 Typical Psychological Scene | You’ve definitely experienced this

“That day I joined a bullish group, and everyone was saying BTC was about to break its previous high. I originally just wanted to start with a small position and test the waters. Then someone in the group posted a screenshot of ‘whale accumulation,’ someone else drew a ‘super cup-and-handle’ technical pattern, and another person confidently said, ‘This time is different; ETF approval will bring in massive capital.’

The more you listen, the more excited you get, thinking, ‘So many people are analyzing things so well; how could they be wrong?’ In a moment of impulse, I increased my position from 5% to 30%.

In the end, the market not only failed to break out, it actually plunged. The group went silent in an instant, then people started blaming each other. That was when I suddenly realized: I wasn’t persuaded by reason at all; I was simply led astray by the crowd’s fanaticism.”

⚠️ How does it sabotage your trading?

  • It makes you go heavy at the top: in the later stage of a bull market, the group’s frenzied discussion can make you overly optimistic, ignore risk, and go heavy or even all in at the top.

  • It makes you cut losses at the bottom: in a bear market, the group’s panic can amplify your pessimism, causing you to exit in despair at the bottom.

  • Loss of independent judgment: you no longer rely on your own analysis and plan, but are led around by the crowd’s emotional wind vane.

  • Intensified ‘regret after the fact’: extreme decisions often bring extreme consequences. Only after losing money do you realize those so-called ‘certainties’ were just emotional bubbles.

🔧 Solution | 3-step action guide

  1. Delay decisions after discussion
Every time you finish discussing in a group and feel fired up, force yourself to:Make no trading decisions within 24 hours.A real opportunity won’t disappear just because you delay 24 hours. Once emotions cool, you’ll see the picture more clearly.

  2. Set the ‘personal analysis first’ rule
Before joining a discussion group, first write down your own independent analysis and plan (entry price, stop-loss price, position size). During the discussion,Only refer to new information provided by others; any decision to revise your plan must wait until you are calm.

  3. Proactively find an ‘opposing views’ group
Don’t stay only in your own camp. Join a group with the opposite view (if you’re bullish, join a bearish group, and vice versa). After hearing both sides’ extreme views, you’ll often return to a more rational middle ground.

Close your eyes and take one deep breath. Silently repeat in your mind: ‘Extreme emotions often signal extreme reversals. I’ll step back and wait until I’m calm.’
Then open your eyes, leave the group or stop checking messages for at least 1 hour.
