The Security Council of Arbitrum froze 30,766 ETH on Arbitrum One linked to the recent attack on KelpDAO.

The council stated that it acted after coordinating with authorities to identify the person responsible for the attack.

BeInCrypto reported that attackers drained about 116,500 rsETH, valued at approximately $292 million, from KelpDAO on April 18. The criminal then used the stolen rsETH as collateral on Aave V3, making significant loans of WETH.

“… KelpDAO seems to have had over $280 million stolen an hour ago on Ethereum and Arbitrum. The addresses used in the attack were funded via Tornado Cash,” reported ZachXBT on Telegram.

Now, the Security Council of Arbitrum has transferred 30,766 ETH to a frozen intermediary wallet just before midnight on April 20, Brasília time, according to the team's statement. Thus, the original address no longer has access to the funds.

Only future governance actions will be able to move the ETH to its new location. Arbitrum reported that the procedure will be conducted in conjunction with the parties involved.

“… After detailed technical analyses and debates, the Security Council adopted and executed a strategy to transfer the funds securely, without impacting the rest of the network or investors of Arbitrum,” highlighted the team.

The Security Council is composed of 12 members elected by the Arbitrum DAO and is responsible for making urgent decisions to protect the DAO, its participants, and the general Arbitrum community. Today's initiative represents a significant use of these emergency prerogatives.

The attack on KelpDAO was the largest exploit in Decentralized Finance (DeFi) of 2026. LayerZero attributed the incident, based on initial evidence, to the Lazarus Group from North Korea, likely its subunit TraderTraitor.
