1. Liquidation of leveraged positions (Liquidations / Leverage unwindings)

When traders use leverage to open large positions, any slight drop in price can force them to automatically close their positions (liquidation). This creates a wave of selling that allows the drop to widen. Indeed, hundreds of millions of dollars in long positions have been liquidated in recent days.

2. Options Expiry

During periods of large options expiration, some participants try to adjust or offload their positions, increasing pressure on the price. For example, there is an expectation of a large Bitcoin option expiration believed to be one of the factors triggering the current downward pressure.

3. Economic Data and Expectations Regarding Interest Rates

If U.S. data (such as inflation, consumer spending) shows it remains strong, investors may fear that the Fed will not cut interest rates soon. Risky assets like Bitcoin are negatively affected when liquidity is expected to decrease.

Also, any delay in interest rate cuts or tight monetary policies leads to a shift of capital towards safe assets like bonds or the dollar.

4. Profit Taking

After significant jumps in price, many investors sell to take profits, especially those who entered at the high price. This selling pressure can cause a temporary reversal.

5. Change in Institutional Investment Flows or Capital Outflows

When large inflows of capital from institutions or big investors decrease, or when they withdraw from the market, this leads to reduced demand and price support.

6. Low Liquidity / Thin Market

In times when the number of traders is low or the number of buy orders is less, any large sale can have a significant impact on the price.

7. Sentiment Shifts and Media Expectations

Negative news, or increased talk about 'buying the dip' on social media can cause investors to rush to sell. For example, analysis from Santiment indicates that a rise in calls to buy the dip could be considered a counter signal, meaning that many people enter after the price has started to drop, which could lead to further declines.
