Iran has elected a new Supreme Leader of the country. Iran launched a barrage of missiles and drones at Israel and its allies in loyalty to the military ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.
On Sunday, March 8, the Assembly of Experts of Iran overwhelmingly elected Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the slain Ali Khamenei, as the new Supreme Leader of the country. This was reported by Iran International, citing an official statement from the Iranian authority.
“At today’s extraordinary meeting, the Assembly of Experts, by a decisive vote of its members, selected and presented Ayatollah Seyed Modjtaba Hoseini Khamenei as the third leader of the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the statement says.
Against the backdrop of the appointment of Iran’s new supreme leader, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) pledged allegiance to Modjtaba Khamenei. The corps stated that the movement supports the choice of the Assembly of Experts and is ready for “complete subordination and self-sacrifice in order to carry out the new supreme leader’s directives.”
It is known that Iran launched a new salvo of rockets and drones as a sign of loyalty by the military to the new supreme leader.
At the same time, some residents of Tehran who oppose the Iranian regime, after news was announced about the appointment of a new ayatollah, shouted at night: “Death to Modjtaba.”
