The community refused to change the Bitcoin code to return $5 billion
Former Mt.Gox CEO Mark Karpeles proposed changing the Bitcoin Core code to return 79,956 BTC stolen back in 2011. At current prices, that's over $5 billion.
The idea involved an exception to the network rules and transferring funds to a recovery address for creditors. However, the discussion was closed in less than a day — not only developers opposed it, but also some of the victims themselves.
The main argument is simple: if the rules are rewritten once for the sake of returning funds, it will undermine the principle of Bitcoin — control over coins is determined only by private keys.
