$ETH Foundation published a document titled Strawmap, which outlines the priorities for the development of the network in the coming years. The plan anticipates about seven updates by 2029 with a cycle of changes approximately every six months.

The first direction is to accelerate the basic level of the network. The goal is to reduce the time for final transaction confirmation to seconds instead of the currently longer intervals. The concept of 'finality' is marked as a long-term goal for 2029, with the first steps planned for the coming year.

The second direction is all about scaling through the implementation of zk-tech directly into the protocol. The goal is to ramp up L1 performance to around 10,000 transactions per second by using mandatory zk-proofs and creating a canonical zk-virtual machine by the end of the decade. Meanwhile, L2 infrastructure is being developed with a focus on throughput and data availability for rollups.

Dedicated segments focus on quantum resistance and privacy. In 2026, there's a plan to implement a post-quantum key registry, and by the end of the decade, there will be a shift to updated cryptography. There's also a possibility of native privacy at the network level without relying on external mixers.

Structurally, 'Strawmap' shows a shift in focus from short-term optimizations to fundamental architectural modernization. If the stated goals are achieved, it will strengthen positions as a scalable and infrastructural network for tokenized assets and decentralized finance.
