A few years ago, NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) burst onto the digital world as a revolution that promised to forever change the way we perceive digital ownership. From the initial enthusiasm to the drastic fall and the present full of learnings, today we take a journey through this digital roller coaster that grabbed so many headlines. ( it was truly overwhelming )

The Rise: When the World Went Crazy for Digital
Everything began to gain momentum in 2021. You remember, right? Suddenly, everyone was talking about NFTs. A digital artwork by Beeple was sold for 69.3 million dollars at a Christie’s auction. Collections like the Bored Ape Yacht Club and CryptoPunks became status symbols… and investments. Some ended up paying fortunes for them, hoping their value would keep rising.
The market as a whole exploded: it went from moving $82 million in 2020 to over $17 billion in 2021. Platforms like OpenSea became the mecca for digital collectors. It seemed like there was no ceiling.
(Who else saw that episode of The Simpsons where they mocked NFTs)
The Fall: When Reality Exceeded Fiction
But every bubble, at some point, finds its pin. Starting in 2022, the NFT market began to cool drastically. Sales plummeted: a 92% drop from their peak in September 2021. 95% of collections lost value, and investor confidence waned.
What happened?
Several factors converged:
Too much speculation: Many people bought out of FOMO (fear of missing out), not out of conviction in the technology or art.
Environmental impact: Each transaction on Ethereum consumed a colossal amount of energy, something that clashed with a growing ecological awareness.
Scams and empty projects: Not all projects were legitimate. Many artists were plagiarized and not a few investors lost their money.
Community rejection: In the gaming world, especially, there were clear resistances. Players did not want NFTs in their favorite games.
The Present: Opportunity Among the Ashes?
Today the market is very different. Less noise, more utility. NFTs have found their place in sectors like video games (almost 40% of the market), digital art, and even virtual real estate.
The total value is around 11 billion dollars, far from the peaks of 2021, but with an annual growth projection close to 32%. The technology has matured: Ethereum reduced its energy consumption by 99%, and blockchains like Solana and Polygon are gaining ground for their speed and low costs.
#BTCvsETH: Two Giants, Two Visions

While Bitcoin consolidates as that 'digital gold' everyone knows, Ethereum has managed to position itself as the heart of decentralized finance and NFTs. Its ability to evolve (goodbye Proof-of-Work!) and its active community keep it at the top. (The one who started all this NFT stuff was Eth, where will it stop now?)
#RedSeptember: Fear or Opportunity?
September is historically a challenging month for markets. This #RedSeptember was no exception: a certain pessimism settled in, but there are also those who see it as a moment of accumulation and opportunity. (This always reminds me of hidden opportunities, but we must consider the NFT aspect)
Conclusion: The Future is Written Now
The NFT market is no longer the same. It has shifted from collective euphoria to seeking real value. Its future will depend on its ability to connect with concrete needs: identity, ownership, art, gaming...
In a forthcoming article, we will delve into the trends that are shaping the direction: artificial intelligence, regulation, and integration with the metaverse. Don't miss it!
