EU tentatively agrees tough cryptocurrency due diligence measures to combat money laundering
According to CoinDesk, EU policymakers reached a provisional agreement on Wednesday on parts of a comprehensive regulatory package to combat money laundering that will make all crypto companies perform due diligence on their customers. The Anti-Money Laundering Regulation (AMLR) is a comprehensive effort to combat sanctions evasion and money laundering. It includes the creation of a single rulebook and the establishment of a regulator that will also have regulatory authority over the crypto industry.
The European Parliament and the Council, which consists of finance ministers from the EU’s 27 member states, have agreed to measures including that crypto companies apply “customer due diligence measures” when conducting transactions of €1,000 ($1,090) or more. Wednesday’s announcement said the agreement also adds measures to reduce the risks associated with transactions from self-hosted wallets. “This agreement is an important part of the EU’s new anti-money laundering regime,” said Belgian Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem. “It will improve the way national anti-money laundering and terrorist financing systems are organized and work together. This will ensure that there is no room for fraudsters, organized crime and terrorists to legitimize their proceeds through the financial system.”
Earlier on January 16, it was reported that the European Banking Authority would expand anti-money laundering measures to cryptocurrency companies.

Therefore, the Monetary Authority of Singapore does not allow such financial products to be listed in Singapore and marketed to retail investors because cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin are not listed as eligible assets for ETFs.

Vitalik Buterin: Stronger security properties than multi-signature are required to meet L2 standards
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin wrote on the X platform: “For me, for something to qualify as L2, it must have stronger security properties than multi-signature, even if it is not an overall guarantee like Rollup. Franklin Templeton: Ordinals and L2 of Bitcoin ecosystem should not be ignored, optimistic about Ethereum ecosystem
The digital asset research team of asset management giant Franklin Templeton published an article stating that the Ordinals and second-layer solutions of the Bitcoin ecosystem should not be ignored. These are essential to solving Bitcoin's economic security problems and improving the practicality of BTC as a store of value (SoV). In addition, it also stated: "I am excited about Ethereum and its ecosystem. Although it has recently experienced a "midlife crisis", we see a bright future with many strong driving forces that will drive the Ethereum ecosystem forward. On Solana, we see Anatoly using single-atom state machines as a powerful use case for decentralized blockchains to reduce information asymmetry. We are impressed by all the activities we have seen on Solana in the fourth quarter of 2023, including DePIN, DeFi, Meme tokens, NFT innovation, and Firedancer."
Sui: Move programming language will add new features such as Enums and macro functions in version 2024
The public chain project Sui Network announced in its official blog that this year, the Move programming language will be updated, providing developers with new ways to define data and call functions. These important new features make building applications on Sui more flexible and in line with expectations for the latest programming languages. The Move 2024 update introduces enumeration types Enums, macro functions, method syntax, and many other new features to make it more powerful. As open source projects, Move and Sui allow the community to continue to improve. The following features will initially be tested in the alpha version, followed by the release candidate version and the final version. Some planned updates to Move will affect existing code.
The 2024 version of Move will be rolled out in a measured manner, allowing developers to test new features and update existing code accordingly. Developers can start testing the alpha version by specifying edition = "2024.alpha" in the "package" section of their Move.toml file. Features released under the alpha version will be unstable and may not compile. After these new features are relatively stable and breaking changes have been added, a release candidate will be released. As with the alpha, developers will be able to test the release candidate by specifying edition = "2024.rc" in the "package" section of their Move.toml file.
Early this year, probably in early March, the compiler will ask developers if they would like to migrate to the release candidate version when building their project. An automated tool will then migrate the project to the new version, adding a version tag in Move.toml and automatically fixing any breaking changes. Later this year, the 2024 Move update will be pushed forward from the release candidate version, and the "2024" version will become the default version for all new Move packages.

Stablecoin protocol Frax Finance plans to launch Layer 2 blockchain Fraxtal in February
According to CoinDesk, Sam Kazemian, founder of the stablecoin protocol Frax Finance, said in an interview that the company is planning to launch the Layer 2 blockchain Fraxtal in February. Kazemian said: "The current schedule is the first week of February. Etherscan will support it through Fraxscan on the first day, and a large number of projects will debut shortly after the release."
The new product will add to Frax's existing product suite, which includes Frax (a fully collateralized algorithmic stablecoin), a lending platform, an automated market maker, an inflation-linked stablecoin, FPI, and a liquid collateral token, frxETH. Fraxtal will use rollup technology, which executes transactions on the Ethereum mainnet, batches the data, compresses it, and sends it back to the mainnet. Frax's liquid collateral token, frxETH, will power Layer 2 and act as a gas fee for the blockchain.

Snowbridge has successfully cross-chained between Polkadot and Ethereum testnet
Snowbridge developer Clara shared on the X platform that she has successfully achieved a cross-chain transfer from Ethereum's testnet Sepolia to Polkadot's testnet Rococo through Snowbridge. This means that the current test is very successful and Snowbridge will be launched on the Kusama network soon.
It is reported that Snowbridge will be deployed on Kusama first, followed by Polkadot. The two deployments will be independent. Both deployments will be bridged to the Ethereum mainnet. There are currently no plans to bridge to other Ethereum networks. At launch, two-way transfers of Ethereum, ERC20 tokens, DOT, and KSM will be supported. At the same time, a client library will be provided to allow third-party teams to build front-ends around the bridge. The launch will be followed by future upgrades to implement more features requested by the community.
Snowbridge is a set of libraries and services for trustless bridging between Ethereum and Polkadot. Snowbridge brings true innovation to cross-chain interoperability, not only for Polkadot, but for the broader blockchain ecosystem. It is the only fully decentralized and trustless Polkadot<>Ethereum bridge. While many other Ethereum bridges exist, they all compromise in some way. Snowbridge is designed to bridge not just assets, but arbitrary states. This means it is not limited to transferring cryptocurrencies or tokens, but can handle a wider range of data and information types, such as cross-chain messaging. Parachains are in high demand for Ethereum bridges, and some chains have introduced more centralized bridges as a stopgap measure. However, without Snowbridge, these stopgap measures would introduce multiple systemic risks to the Polkadot ecosystem.

The exchange plans to launch the DMM project in the spot market in the first quarter of this year. The company added: "Taken together, these initiatives will enable WOO X to achieve a 100% custody ratio in the second quarter of this year." The statement said the company intends to use the newly raised funds for global market expansion and obtaining regulatory licenses. The main purpose of the financing is to "align the interests of liquidity providers" rather than raising funds, as the participants in this round of financing are market makers who promise to improve WOO X's liquidity.
WOO X said that the company improved its business model in the third quarter of last year, working with more liquidity providers in the spot and perpetual futures markets, trying to "break away from the constraints of a single liquidity provider, Kronos Research". In November 2023, Kronos suffered a hacker attack, which reportedly caused a loss of approximately $25 million. After the incident, Kronos suspended all trading, which once caused problems for Woo X. Woo X is an exchange incubated by Kronos, which is the main market maker of the exchange.

The cold wave in the United States caused the power of the entire Bitcoin network to drop by about 25%
According to The Block, after the recent cold snap, Bitcoin's network hash rate has dropped by about 25% in the past few days due to power rationing requests from grid regulators in Texas, a state that has now become a global center for the crypto mining industry.
Data from MiningPoolStats and Blockchain.com show that global hashrate estimates dropped from about 600 EH/s on Friday to 450 EH/s on Tuesday (it has now recovered to 512.46 EH/s), coinciding with a weather alert issued by ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas), the grid regulator for much of the state, from January 14 to 17 due to extreme cold weather in the region.
Officials issued conservation calls on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday after ERCOT issued its warning. "Due to continued cold temperatures, record-breaking demand and unseasonably low winds, operating reserves are expected to be low tomorrow morning," ERCOT said. "We ask Texas businesses and residents to conserve electricity where it is safe to do so." Yesterday's latest request for power cuts ended at 9 a.m. Central Time.
