When we hear the word 'inflation' in cryptocurrencies, we immediately think it’s something negative, and that’s natural.
But the truth? Inflation in layer one currencies
Sometimes it is a means to ensure the security of the network and incentivize participants. Let me share with you the actual inflation rates for six of the largest blockchain currencies.
Solana ($SOL )
• It started with an inflation rate of 8% annually.
• The inflation mechanism decreases by 15% every year until it reaches a final target of 1.5%.
• The current inflation rate is about 4.3%.
Inflation here is intended to ensure sufficient rewards for participants in the network, and over time it decreases gradually.
⸻
Polkadot (DOT)
• It has a fixed annual issuance of about 120 million DOT.
• This equates to an inflation of about 8%.
• It is distributed between the treasury and participants in the Staking.
The network maintains a stable inflation rate to support the internal economy.
⸻
Toncoin (TON)
• The inflation is among the lowest rates in the market: about 0.6% annually.
And this makes it a stable currency in terms of supply, especially with its increasing use in applications on Telegram.
⸻
Ethereum ($ETH )
• After the merge and the activation of fee burning (EIP-1559), the goal is to make it a deflationary currency.
• But currently, ETH records a slight inflation of about 0.5–0.7% annually.
However, in the long term, it may turn deflationary if activity on the network increases.
⸻
Cardano (ADA)
• The inflation is about 2% annually.
• It distributes a large portion of inflation as rewards to ADA holders participating in the Staking.
And this allows currency holders to benefit from the natural growth of the network.
⸻
$BNB (Binance Coin)
• Different from other currencies because it is a deflationary currency, not inflationary.
• It has a quarterly burn mechanism that gradually reduces the supply.
• The ultimate goal is to reduce the total supply from 200 million BNB to only 100 million BNB.
This means that over time, the value of the currency is supposed to increase with a decrease in supply.
⸻
The advice
Inflation is not your enemy...
The important thing is to understand how it is controlled and how it serves the network's economy.
Focus on projects that have a clear plan to reduce inflation over time, or like BNB, which has a deflationary mechanism.
