Key Points
March is Women's History Month, a time to remind us not to forget the important role women have played in history and contemporary society, and to applaud every woman.
Binance firmly believes that improving women’s cryptocurrency literacy will go a long way in narrowing gender “choice preferences”.
From funding Web3 education to hosting women-first crypto events, Binance is committed to our mission of building an inclusive future.
Happy Women’s History Month! Read on to learn how Binance is increasing female participation in crypto.
Since the birth of Bitcoin in 2009, digital currencies have continued to develop, showing an application curve similar to that of the Internet. Today, millions of people rely on Web3 to complete various tasks. However, women, a highly valuable group, seem to have become spectators in the story of Web3.
As blockchain technology demonstrates its potential to democratize finance, we must learn from the experience of other industries and avoid falling into the trap of gender inequality. The blockchain industry has a responsibility to support the development of women in Web3, while also providing opportunities for female investors in the broader market to gain cryptocurrency knowledge and education.
Binance's mission is to allow money to flow freely around the world. Improving the diversity of the cryptocurrency ecosystem is an important part of achieving this mission and unleashing the full potential of blockchain. We hope to help all women who are interested in cryptocurrency master cryptocurrency knowledge through a series of activities and programs. It is Women's History Month again. During this special day, let us look back at the achievements we have made in the past and strive towards a future of equal development.
Binance’s contribution to funding Web3 education for women
In 2022, Binance Charity donated $2 million and provided Web3 scholarships to more than 36,000 women. In 2023, Binance Charity will focus on women and underrepresented groups and continue to fund relevant courses, projects, and scholarships. A 2023 survey by TripleA showed that women accounted for only 37% of cryptocurrency owners. We believe that education is crucial to promoting the accessibility of digital finance to different groups and building multi-party digital finance.
Women like Chidinma and Ebeh from Germany, Nigeria, Kenya, Brazil, France, South Africa, Australia, and Ukraine have received scholarships for 2022, which will fund blockchain and cryptocurrency courses at universities, schools, and non-profit organizations. In honor of Women’s History Month (March) and International Women’s Day (March 8), Binance Charity made a special donation of $100,000 to the Georgia Innovation and Technology Agency (GITA) to support Web3 education and training for women.
Helen Hai, Head of Binance Charity, said: “In the five years since Binance Charity was founded, we have helped more than two million women through education and humanitarian programs. Unfortunately, many women are still affected by important social issues such as inequality, lack of educational opportunities, and poverty, which we will focus on and address in the long term.”
In February 2023, Binance held its first "Crypto Women" event in Dubai, bringing together beginners and experienced female investors to share insights, communicate in depth, and discuss the opportunities that Web3 provides for women around the world. Building on this, we plan to launch regional and international events to connect women with web3 management capabilities.
Bringing Gender “Choice Preferences” Closer to Web3
A recent report from CoinJournal shows that women make up less than 5% of the founders of top cryptocurrency companies; in addition, as of 2022, only 292 of the more than 10,000 companies surveyed were founded by women.
Binance co-founder and CMO He Yi is one of the earliest female executives in the industry. She is determined to help more women succeed in the cryptocurrency industry. He Yi said:
“As one of the few female leaders in the industry, I believe it is our responsibility to help more women learn about Web3 and blockchain technology through Binance Charity and Binance Academy. Our education and internship programs help young women acquire the knowledge and skills to become industry disruptors. We believe that everyone with an idea can change the world, regardless of gender. I hope our efforts can enable more women to stand at the forefront of innovation and drive industry change.”
Cryptocurrency is still in its infancy, and we can always learn lessons from the tech industry and build on our experience. Education should be a top priority. Web3 creates a unique opportunity for us to engage a variety of groups at the very beginning of the industry.
As the industry continues to develop, the demand for talent is also increasing. This is the best time to cultivate more outstanding female practitioners. Promoting educational development is of far-reaching significance. Putting education first can help more women grow into well-trained and qualified practitioners and solve the gender gap problem from the source.
To further address gender inequality, Binance has created the first formal internship program and graduate program to provide opportunities for all types of talents, including women, to enter the cryptocurrency field. Binance will also provide guidance and industry development advice to women through seminars, educational courses and industry experience sharing lectures, female mentorship programs, and special talent seminars themed on entering the Web3 industry.
We are launching a new AI product, Binance Sensei, which users can ask questions to while learning about crypto at Binance Academy, the free Web3 knowledge center. In addition to providing free crypto learning resources in more than 30 languages at Binance Academy, Binance is also offering up to $600 in transaction fee waivers to welcome new users to the world of crypto.
