The Montana Senate has passed a cryptocurrency “mining rights” bill aimed at protecting the rights of miners. The bill passed the state Senate on Feb. 23 and will go to the House for approval. If passed by the House, it would become law if signed by Gov. Greg Gianforte.

The bill proposes to grant “the right to mine digital assets,” prohibit charging cryptocurrency miners “unreasonable” electricity bills, and strip local governments of the power to use zoning laws to prevent cryptocurrency mining operations. It also prohibits additional taxes on the use of cryptocurrencies as a form of payment and treats "digital assets" including cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as "personal property" along with other financial products such as stocks and bonds.
