What is USDT0?
USDT0 is a new type of stablecoin officially launched by Tether in January 2025, known as the 'cross-chain bridging version of USDT', aimed at addressing the high-cost issues faced when using USDT across multiple blockchains.
Unlike other stablecoins that are backed by real-world assets such as dollars, bonds, or gold, USDT0 is anchored 1:1 to USDT. It adopts the Omnichain Fungible Token (OFT) standard of the cross-chain protocol LayerZero, allowing tokens to be transferred seamlessly across different blockchains with zero cost loss.
The brand new stablecoin USDT0 has officially launched on the Sei mainnet, supporting cross-chain seamless liquidity transfer based on the LayerZero protocol, without the need for bridging or waiting times. USDT0 is backed 1:1 by USDT locked on Ethereum, replacing the previously bridged Kava USDT via Kava, becoming the officially recommended standard for Sei. Developers can access and integrate USDT0 through Symphony or LayerZero compatible bridging tools for more efficient cross-chain stablecoin interactions.
What is the purpose of USDT0?
The launch of USDT0 aims to expand the adoption of Tether's stablecoin ecosystem, providing a solution to the cross-chain cost issues that can enhance liquidity in the blockchain DeFi ecosystem and stimulate accelerated institutional adoption. As stated in the announcement, after deploying USDT0 on Optimism and Unichain, the following effects will be observed:
Achieve zero slippage when transferring USDT0 within the DeFi ecosystem, meaning true seamless transfer of USDT;
Provide deep liquidity for lending, trading, and payments, thus laying a stable and capital-efficient foundation for DeFi applications;
Diversified combinations, USDT0 can achieve seamless connection and transfer across Ethereum, TON, Tron, and the Superchain ecosystem.
USDT0: Tether's brand new solution
Tether is one of the largest stablecoin issuers globally and has experienced several events in recent weeks. The new MiCA regulations severely limit its operations in the EU, but the company is prepared to avoid lasting damage.
Tether announces a full migration to El Salvador and is now launching the new USDT0 stablecoin.
'USDT0 introduces a much-needed solution for seamless USDT flow within ecosystems. By improving interoperability and reducing friction, it enhances the user experience in a way that aligns with Tether's broader vision. It's exciting to see this innovation emerge and meet real market demands.'
Tether claims that USDT0 will initially launch on the L2 Ink supported by Kraken. This is a natural choice for the partner since the exchange has collaborated with Tether multiple times regarding MiCA launch-related matters.
USDT0 will be a cross-chain token that can 'create a seamless channel for institutional liquidity.' Specifically, it will become a tool for moving USDT across blockchains, driving DeFi growth.
Tether claims that its first wave of expansion partners is developing features. The first is Berachain, an L1 blockchain focused on liquidity, and MegaETH, a promising Ethereum project. Other partners will be announced in the coming weeks.
