Pi Network has made headlines with its mainnet launch, delivering one of the most significant airdrops in cryptocurrency history. As one of the most anticipated cryptocurrency projects, Pi Network has attracted millions of users worldwide. However, skepticism surrounds the project, with critics labeling it a potential pyramid scheme or even a scam.

In addition to these allegations, the development of Pi Network also faced significant internal turmoil, nearly leading to a collapse before its official launch. Legal disputes among founding members in 2020 exposed deep conflicts that threatened to derail the project.

In 2020, co-founder Vincent McPhilip took legal action against other Pi Network co-founders Nicolas Kokkalis and Chengdiao Fan. McPhilip claimed that he was unfairly ousted from the company and accused Kokkalis and Fan of mismanaging finances.

According to McPhilip, the couple's marital issues severely impacted the company's operations, creating a toxic work environment. He alleged that the heated arguments and even physical conflicts between the two made it difficult for him to lead the project effectively.

The lawsuit details disturbing incidents of verbal abuse and physical misconduct, in which McPhilip claims:

"Kokkalis and Fan have marital issues, manifested not only in yelling at the workplace but also in mutual physical altercations witnessed by the plaintiff."

Tensions escalated further in April 2020 when McPhilip temporarily stepped down from his role to mediate internal conflicts. However, his departure was interpreted by Kokkalis and Fan as abandonment, leading them to revoke his access to the company's assets, including servers and financial accounts.

Additionally, McPhilip accused the couple of attempting to dilute his ownership by issuing new shares at a low valuation of $0.00005 per share. This is particularly concerning as Pi Network had previously raised significant capital through SAFE (Simple Agreement for Future Equity) investments, securing funding at a valuation of $20 million from 2019 to 2020.

Kokkalis and Fan countered these allegations, arguing that McPhilip was fired for violating company policy.

Ultimately, the dispute was privately resolved in July 2023, with the settlement terms remaining undisclosed. Since then, McPhilip has continued to work in the cryptocurrency field, launching a new project called Knomad and remaining active in the industry.

Pi Network responds to fraud allegations

Despite rapid growth, Pi Network continues to face allegations of fraud and scams. Many critics argue that the project lacks transparency, with some even comparing its structure to a pyramid scheme.

On February 22, Pi Network directly addressed these concerns, dismissing claims that they were involved in fraudulent activities. The team clarified that scammers unrelated to the project had exploited their name.

A report from the Chinese police warned about individuals impersonating representatives of Pi Network. However, Pi Network denied any involvement and stated that no authorities had contacted them regarding this issue.

"Pi Network has not been contacted by any police department in China regarding this matter. Pi strongly condemns any alleged activities of any wrongdoers," the team stated.

Moreover, Pi Network has dismissed rumors of a relationship with the cryptocurrency exchange ByBit and its CEO, Ben Zhou. The research team clarified that they had never contacted ByBit or commented on its leadership.

To further distance themselves from controversies, Pi Network also distanced itself from a social media account that made negative statements about Zhou. The project emphasized that they were not associated with those remarks.

"Pi Network, as well as anyone associated with Pi Network, has never commented on ByBit or Mr. Zhou, whether on social media or any other medium. Despite the comments about Pi, we maintain our stance of not commenting on ByBit, Mr. Zhou, or their business," the project stated.

Market performance and future prospects of Pi

Despite internal conflicts and external skepticism, the token of Pi Network has witnessed significant price volatility. After launching the mainnet, the token initially dropped below $1 but then surged 86% within 24 hours, reaching $1.50 according to the latest update.

With a fully diluted valuation of $158 billion and a market capitalization of about $10 billion, Pi Network continues to attract attention. Whether the project can maintain this growth momentum and address concerns about its legitimacy remains to be seen.

Currently, Pi Network remains a divisive force in the cryptocurrency world - embraced by supporters, criticized by skeptics, and overshadowed by a tumultuous past.
