The cryptocurrency universe continues to expand rapidly, and exchanges (platforms where you buy and sell cryptocurrencies) are fundamental parts of this ecosystem. One of the most observed metrics when evaluating the importance of each platform is the trading volume, which reflects the amount of assets transacted in a given period.

This indicator not only reveals liquidity and user activity, but also helps to measure the confidence and vitality of each exchange in the global market.

Just as we did in 2024, we present the updated list of six exchanges that stand out in spot volume (i.e., in the spot market, excluding derivatives) in 2025 — crucial data to understand real liquidity without the effect of futures or leveraged contracts. We will see that some of them move daily amounts higher than the average of large traditional stock exchanges, such as Bovespa (which moves around US$ 4 billion a day).

1. Binance

  • Daily volume (spot): ~US$15 billion

Binance remains at the top of the list, outperforming its rivals by a wide margin. This colossal volume reflects several factors: from an offering of over 400 listed cryptocurrencies to competitive trading fees and global partnerships. The exchange has also invested heavily in security and compliance, seeking to meet a variety of regulations in different countries, reaching a market share of approximately 30%.

Another highlight is the app’s ease of use and all-in-one ecosystem, which includes staking, launchpads, and even an NFT marketplace. The deep liquidity attracts both high-volume and beginner traders, making Binance the preferred platform for those who want to trade crypto without worrying about large price swings when buying or selling.

2. Bybit

  • Daily volume (spot): ~US$7 billion

Bybit emerged as an exchange initially focused on crypto derivatives, but now also stands out in the spot market. In 2025, its daily volume is expected to consolidate in the range of US$ 7.3 billion, ensuring good liquidity for a wide range of trading pairs.

The platform is known for its intuitive interface and strong appeal to traders looking for advanced features, such as detailed charts and analysis tools. In addition, Bybit strives to offer multilingual support (including in Portuguese) and has implemented incentive and education programs to attract new users.

Despite facing regulatory challenges in certain countries, Bybit continues to expand and capture a growing market share.

3. Coinbase

  • Daily volume (spot): ~US$4 billion

Coinbase has established itself as the leading crypto exchange in the United States, focusing on security and regulatory compliance. This attracts a large base of institutional investors and users looking for a reliable trading environment.

Although Coinbase is listed on the US stock exchange and faced some regulatory frictions throughout 2023 and 2024, it will remain strong in 2025 with a daily volume of around US$4 billion in the spot market. The platform places a high emphasis on ease of use, with a clean interface and dedicated customer support, which attracts many beginners. It also supports a growing number of cryptocurrencies, although it is not as extensive as Binance’s catalog.

4. OKX

  • Daily volume (spot): ~US$3 billion

OKEx (formerly known as OKEx) has been among the largest crypto platforms for years. Based in multiple locations (including Hong Kong), it offers a range of products ranging from spot trading to DeFi, lending and derivatives options.

OKEx’s appeal lies in its combination of advanced features and a relatively simple interface, helping users of all skill levels find what they need. Additionally, the exchange maintains crypto education initiatives to help newcomers and is constantly seeking partnerships with emerging projects, ensuring a robust altcoin list.

5. KuCoin

  • Daily volume (spot): ~US$1.5 billion

KuCoin has made a name for itself as the “altcoin exchange,” offering listings for smaller projects before they become mainstream on larger platforms. Its average spot volume of $1.5 billion shows that liquidity has increased significantly in 2025, although it still lags behind the industry giants.

The exchange is betting on products such as staking, launchpads and even its own blockchain (KCC) to leverage the ecosystem. For those who like to explore new tokens and embryonic projects, KuCoin is a great option. However, it is always important to check the reliability of lesser-known tokens, as they tend to have a higher risk of manipulation or lack of real liquidity.

6. Kraken

  • Daily volume (spot): ~US$1.3 billion

Kraken is one of the oldest exchanges in operation and stands out for its rigorous focus on security and transparency. In 2025, it continues to deliver consistent volumes — around $1.3 billion in spot trading — and has a solid reputation especially among European and North American traders.

The platform offers margin trading and supports staking of various cryptocurrencies, which attracts many users looking for passive income. It is also famous for its clear Proof of Reserves display, showing that it holds enough assets to cover all client deposits.

Why Watch Volume (And Other Indicators Too)

Trading volume is crucial for traders because it indicates liquidity — the higher the volume, the lower the chance of experiencing large price swings when executing larger orders. It also suggests an active and trusting user base on the platform.

However, it’s not all about volume: there are cases of wash trading or manipulation, where volume can be artificially inflated. It’s important to check Proof of Reserves (PoR), exchange reputation, hack history, and customer support to get a more complete picture. After all, liquidity is great, but security and transparency are equally crucial.

In 2025, the six exchanges listed above will still dominate much of the global landscape - together, they represent almost half of the entire market - but there are several others emerging, in addition to decentralized platforms (DEXs) that are growing in popularity. The choice depends on each investor's profile - some prefer the multitude of tokens offered by KuCoin or the more robust security and compliance offered by Kraken, for example.

Looking to the Future: Rapidly Evolving Market

When we compare the daily volumes of Binance or Bybit with traditional markets, we notice that these crypto platforms easily surpass the movement of Bovespa, the main stock exchange in Brazil, or even the fixed income market. This illustrates the size of the crypto industry and the global interest it generates.

With new regulations being discussed, institutional players entering the market, and the search for more sophisticated security solutions, the exchange rankings are likely to remain dynamic. Still, if you’re looking for an exchange to trade cryptocurrencies on in 2025, the six listed here are solid places to start, whether you’re a newbie looking for a simple environment or an experienced trader looking for high liquidity and advanced tools.
