DeepSeek: the Chinese app that surpassed ChatGPT in popularity and turned the AI market upside down.
Shares of major US technology companies plummeted on Monday (27/1) after the rise of a low-cost chatbot developed by a Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) company.
The DeepSeek app, launched last week, surpassed competitors such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and became the most downloaded free app in the United States and China.
The app appeared first on the lists of most popular apps in the Apple store in these countries.
On Monday night, US President Donald Trump said the situation is a "wake-up call" for his country's technology industry.
"I hope the launch of DeepSeek AI, from a Chinese company, is a wake-up call to our industries that we need to be focused on competing to win," Trump said at a meeting with Republicans in Miami.
The rise of DeepSeek caused investors to quickly sell shares of big tech names.
Shares in chipmaker Nvidia, the third most valuable company in the United States behind Microsoft and Apple, plunged 16% in mid-day trading on Monday, wiping out $$ 500 billion (about R$ 2.9 trillion) of its market value.
Other big tech companies also saw losses: Microsoft fell 3.7%, and Google parent Alphabet more than 3%.
In Europe, Dutch chipmaker ASML saw its shares fall more than 7%, while Siemens Energy, which makes AI-related hardware, saw its share value fall by a fifth.
Calculations by the Financial Times and Bloomberg news agency put the losses at tech companies at more than $$ 1 trillion (R$ 5.9 trillion) in market value on Monday.
