Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin issued a stern warning about the potential dangers of political tokens like TRUMP and MELANIA, describing them as "unlimited political bribery tools."

Buterin's statement, shared on social media platform X today, comes amid growing interest in cryptocurrency from many senior politicians, including U.S. President Donald Trump.

Buterin's concerns are part of a broader discussion about the evolving cryptocurrency context, where he cited the risks of creating unregulated tokens and the conflict between short-term excitement and long-term value in the industry.

“We have entered a new order since last year,” Buterin wrote, adding: “The most powerful people in the world are now welcoming the idea of anyone creating tokens for anything, at any scale. So now is the time to talk about the difference between short-term pleasure and long-term fulfillment and wealth creation, which is unwise to introduce to newcomers.”

He likened this phenomenon to "modern mobile games that are addictive" prioritizing instant gratification, in contrast to more strategic and enduring activities like chess.

Buterin expressed particular concern about large-scale political coins, arguing that they pose risks that go beyond individual participants in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Buterin wrote: “Large-scale political coins go even further: they are not a source of entertainment, and their harm is only limited to the mistakes that participants intentionally make,” adding: “They are unlimited political bribery tools, including bribery of foreign nation-states.”

The Ethereum founder's comments came after Buterin recently launched two high-profile political tokens named TRUMP and MELANIA, related to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.
