The domain name bitcoin.org was registered on August 18, 2008. [ 19 ] In November of the same year, Satoshi Nakamoto published a letter to the metzdowd.com mailing list explaining what Bitcoin is and how it works. In 2009, Satoshi released the source code for Bitcoin on a platform called SourceForge. [ 20 ] That month, the Bitcoin network went live, and Satoshi mined the first block of the blockchain, known as the "genesis block". [ 21 ] [ 22 ] The first Bitcoin transaction was between Satoshi Nakamoto and a man named Hal Finney. In the transaction, Satoshi gave Han Finney 10 Bitcoins. [ 23 ] Satoshi mined about 1 million Bitcoins in the first year. [ 24 ] Then in 2010, Satoshi Nakamoto transferred control of the Bitcoin network key and the code repository for Bitcoin Core (the software wallet where Bitcoin is stored) to a software developer named Gavin Andresen. [ 25 ] Gavin Andresen subsequently became the lead developer of the Bitcoin Foundation. Satoshi Nakamoto has not been seen since.
