From scaling and the explosive growth of the Layer 2 ecosystem to the first Devcon and The Merge in three years, 2022 has been an exciting year for Ethereum and ethereum.org. With the help of thousands of amazing contributors, we have launched many impactful features and content.

Let’s take a closer look at the highlights of the Ethereum ecosystem in 2022:

Translation Project

Translating educational Ethereum-related content into as many languages as possible is critical to our team’s vision for the ethereum.org website. Since we became a multilingual site in 2019, the contributor community has made great progress. In 2022, the number of people contributing to our translation program continued to grow, and we saw a surge in readers in non-English languages. The detailed numbers are as follows:

3,000 new translators 4.6 million words translated 28% of visits were in languages other than English (twice as high as in 2021) Community Engagement

Ethereum.org is the work of thousands of amazing contributors, and every contribution helps build the community. As well as translation work, ethereum.org excels in many other community-driven initiatives. In 2022, we hit 37,000 Discord members, 7,000 Crowdin members, and 1,000 contributors on GitHub, which is a huge milestone!

Specifically, when we rolled out the Typescript and UI library migrations, we had over 50 code contributors.

In terms of content, we also have dozens of contributors writing new pages for ethereum.org, including pages about blockchain cross-chain bridges, DeSci, decentralized identity, and more.

Open design system

We have been working on creating the ethereum.org design system since May 2022. It was a lot of work to finalize the design, and we are excited to share it with you. In Q1 2023, we will begin deploying code to support the new design system.

One of the primary goals behind creating a design system was to provide a way for designers to contribute to the open source Ethereum community. We will continue to work with the community and open up our design process to the community in 2023.

New Page

2022 was the year with the most new content on ethereum.org. We delivered informative and popular pages that were read by over a million people. Some highlights include:

Layer 2: Tells users why Ethereum scales through Rollup and how to join Layer 2. Running a Node: Emphasizes the value of running a node and provides readers with steps and relevant resources to start running their own node. Staking Hub: Demystifies the staking process and the main advantages of different staking methods. Introduction to Web3: Explains the principles, philosophical definitions, and current limitations of Web3. Energy Consumption: Shows Ethereum's current and historical energy consumption and the impact of mergers.

In 2023, we will continue to collaborate with communities and subject matter experts within the Ethereum ecosystem to fill our gaps and provide high-value content to our readers.

Recommended wallet upgrade

Another important milestone for 2022 is the improvement of our wallet. A large part of the traffic to ethereum.org comes from users who are looking to get their first wallet. On our previous Find a Wallet page, providing a comparison feature of different wallets required a lot of work, which made it difficult for users to decide which wallet would be best for their needs.

After several design iterations, we set out to create an e-commerce-like experience that would allow users to filter wallets by specific features, compare features between wallets, and select user personas with recommended features.

Learning Center and Study Tests

We know that there are always new users trying to learn about Ethereum, and in 2022, we spent a lot of time focusing on creating a better experience for these users. Creating easy-to-understand content is also a driving principle for all our work.

Learning centre

We created the Learn Hub because users needed help finding a starting point for learning Ethereum without being overwhelmed by the amount of information available on our website and the incoherence of the different pages. The Learn Hub is a guided path for users, starting with the basics of what cryptocurrency is; guiding them through making their first wallet; teaching them how the Ethereum protocol works and how they can participate in the ecosystem.

Study Test

In addition to providing a structured learning path through the Learn Hub, we also want to make learning Ethereum more interesting for users, improve their memory, and gamify the process. To this end, we created learning quizzes. Each quiz has several questions, with multiple possible answers and explanations after submitting the answer to help users better understand Ethereum-related knowledge.

We currently have eight pages of learning quizzes, with plans for more features and pages in 2023, including:

What is Ethereum What is ETH Web3 Introduction Layer 2 NFT Wallet Security and Fraud Prevention Merger

Ethereum Merger

Without a doubt, the biggest Ethereum event of 2022 is the merge. As part of preparing for the merge, we audited content across our entire site to understand what would need to change after Ethereum switched to proof-of-stake.

In addition to reviewing and updating hundreds of pages of existing content, we created many new pages to show the changes we made, such as: Proof of Stake FAQ, Proof of Stake vs. Proof of Work, How Blocks Are Produced Based on Proof of Stake, and more.

For full details, see our three big plans related to The Merge:

Preparation before the merger

Post-merger content update

The gap after the merger

other projects

In addition to our core product at ethereum.org, we spend a lot of time presenting other projects that are critical to Ethereum’s success, including:

Ethereum Foundation Blog: Rebuilt the blog to deepen internationalization Ecosystem Support Program (ESP): Rebuilt the ESP website Geth: Designed and built a new website for Geth’s documentation EthStaker CLR: Designed and built an application to support staking-centric quadratic funding Staking Launchpad: Updated and added content to The Merge, and added translations EF Cryptography Research: Designed and built a blog for EF cryptography researchers KZG Ceremony: Helped add internationalization and fixed front-end bugs for the upcoming KZG ceremony

Looking ahead

Just like Ethereum itself, we have a long way to go if we want to continue building the most comprehensive and inclusive content for Ethereum on the Internet.
