Solana has launched the testnet for Firedancer, built by Web3 development firm Jump Crypto. Firedancer is a new validator client for the network aimed at increasing speed, reliability and validator diversity. The mainnet launch is targeted in the first half of 2024.
Firedancer has been seen as a long-term fix to Solana's past network outage. Solana suffered 14 partial or major outages in 2022 but its uptime improved in 2023 with only one major outage, which occurred in February.
With Firedancer, Solana will have multiple sets of code that can run the chain, which decreases the probability that a bug can cause significant damage to the network. If one implementation has a problem, it is unlikely that a second, completely independent implementation will have the same bugs at the same time.
