One of Latin America's biggest businessmen had a team in the United States to investigate promising new technologies.
Founder of Mercado Livre, Marcos Galperin
In an exclusive interview with La Nacion, Marcos Galperin, the founder and owner of Mercado Libre, revealed that he bought bitcoin in 2013.
In the conversation with the portal, after five years without talking to the Argentine press, Galperin spoke about the future of his company in the market. In addition, he stated that he has no intention of becoming president of Argentina in the future, and that he never wanted to be a politician.
According to Galperin, the Latin mega-entrepreneur believes that his company has managed to democratize commerce in the region.
This is because people from anywhere in Brazil, Argentina, Chile or Mexico can offer their products on the platform, and customers can make purchases easily.
In his speech, Galperin also acknowledged the difficulty of doing business in Latin America, and never imagined that he would be able to succeed in his journey. Even so, he never gave up on his dreams and says he is proud to have a company that generates 27 jobs per hour.
Founder and owner of Mercado Livre bought bitcoin in 2013
In a relaxed tone, Marcos Galperin spoke about the topic of cryptocurrencies and bitcoin. According to the founder of Mercado Livre, he is absolutely convinced that cryptocurrencies will play a very important role in the future of personal finance.
But looking back, he highlighted that in 2013, someone from Mercado Livre traveled to the United States to look for promising new technologies. Since the company had no interest in having an office in the country, they rented a room in the office of Wences Casares and Micky Malka, two famous serial entrepreneurs.
In that environment of innovation, they ended up receiving more information about bitcoin, and decided to buy it. In the interview, Galperin did not say how much bitcoin he bought at the time or whether he had sold this asset over the years.
In any case, in the interview with La Nacion, the founder of Mercado Libre said that bitcoin is a currency that governments cannot devalue, which for him is a fundamental reality.
“I believe that when you look at the fiscal deficits that exist in all governments around the world, having a currency that governments cannot devalue like bitcoin, for me is something absolutely fundamental and I also believe that it is a currency that gives freedoms to people and individuals independently of governments. This is super valuable for society, for people,” said Galperin.
It is worth noting that in the past Marcos Galperin has made several public gestures towards bitcoin, in addition to selling the currency through Mercado Pago in Brazil.
