OpenSocial, Farcaster, DSCVR and Lens are the four most commonly used on-chain social protocols, with a total of more than 250,000 daily active users.

  • On-chain social is an emerging consumer category that allows users to build and integrate their network of followers, also known as a "social graph," across different applications without having to start from scratch. The space is approaching all-time highs as daily active users, developer activity, and funding continue to grow. While Farcaster and Lens are generally considered market leaders in the space, the OpenSocial protocol in the Asia-Pacific region has surpassed 100,000 daily active users this week, surpassing Farcaster's 65,000 and Lens' 25,000 combined. DSCVR, based on Solana, has also surpassed 60,000 daily active users, but remains relatively unknown to the general public.

  • Zora Network is an application-specific L2 designed to support the Zora platform, where users can share, mint, and collect NFTs through curated social feeds. It can simply be called "Instagram on the chain". Zora shares the minting fees with creators, bringing creators 3,586.5 ETH (about $8.5 million) in revenue since July 2023, and distributed 350 ETH (about $830,000) to creators in August 2024 alone.

  • Once a star in the SocialFi space, Friend.tech is fading into irrelevance. At its peak in October 2023, Friend.tech had over 10,000 daily active users and over $100,000 in daily revenue, even surpassing $1 million in revenue on September 14, 2023. However, in the four months since May, new user inflow has dropped significantly (only 3 new users on September 4), and the total volume and fees of key and club transactions have dropped by more than 95%. The platform's native token $FRIEND has also fallen by 85%, from $0.887 to $0.120, since the team announced on June 9 that they would migrate from Base to their own L2, Friendchain - a plan that has since been cancelled. Daily trading volume is only $7,600, compared to over $10 million in mid-May.

Lens

David | Website | Dashboard

Lens currently has about 20,000 daily active users, down 50% from its all-time high, but users are still generating about 65,000 posts a day.

  • Lens, a protocol that puts social behaviors like posts, follows, and profiles on-chain, has about 20,000 daily active users. That’s a threefold increase year-over-year, but down 50% from its all-time high of 40,000 in June 2024.

  • In terms of active users, Phaver is the dominant app with 50% of users. However, in terms of user monetization, Orb has a market share of about 60% - it is worth noting that although Orb has less than 10% of the total users, these users are the highest quality.

  • Lens’ revenue is derived from profile casting, similar to Farcaster, while also charging a 5% fee on posts collected on the network. To date, Lens’ coffers have accumulated about $500,000 in revenue, mainly thanks to profile casting on the network.

  • Transaction highlights: A user named Lulita posted a photo on Lens as a collectible, and the user minted it 5 times at a price of 100 $BONSAI each time. $BONSAI is the meme token of Lens creators. These mintings brought the creator $3.5 in revenue. Overall, the economic system has a monthly revenue of about $10,000 to $20,000, which is down from the peak of about $270,000 in April.

Farcaster

Anthony Loya | Website | Dashboard

Farcaster has 675,632 users connected to 729,670 addresses.

  • Farcaster is a social media protocol that enables applications to be built on top of it. The platform uses FIDs (Farcaster IDs) to identify users and enable cross-platform interaction. From March to September 2024, daily broadcasts (similar to "posts" on social media) increased from 200,000 to more than 1.4 million, with the number of reactions peaking at nearly 5 million. After a stable period in June and July, September data shows that the number of daily broadcasts has stabilized between 550,000 and 600,000, the number of reactions between 1.5 million and 2 million, and the number of link shares between 200,000 and 300,000. Significantly higher than March levels.

  • Farcaster saw daily activity of 604,786 broadcasts and 1,584,278 reactions, based on a 30-day average. The platform added 898,015 new signatories, a feature that allows users to safely delegate actions to an application without having to worry about the security of their entire account. Individual creators like @cryptohindio and @cryptoteluguo also gained traction, with their posts both receiving over 30,000 reactions. However, the platform does face challenges in keeping users active. The ratio of daily active users to monthly active users has fluctuated between 0.2 and 0.4 over the past year, indicating possible issues with user retention.

Dune - @pixelhack

  • From March to September 2024, Farcaster users’ transactions were mainly concentrated on the Base network, accounting for 70-80% of all activity, with an average of 1,000 transactions per day. Ethereum’s Layer 2 solutions, especially Optimism and Arbitrum, have also seen widespread adoption - Zora has also gained attention in NFT-related activities, while the Ethereum mainnet maintains 5-10% of total transaction volume. This trend reflects users’ preference for scalable and cost-effective solutions in a diverse blockchain ecosystem.

Pods.media

David | Website | Dashboard

Pods have been minted in excess of 900,000 units, with over 400,000 mints.

  • Pods.media is a crypto-native publishing platform that allows creators to publish podcasts as collectible NFTs with one click. Traditional RSS feeds can also interact with these podcasts on the web2 platform. The characteristics of NFTs allow creators to earn income, identify their loyal fans, and expand the use of podcasts. Since the third quarter of 2023, Pods has launched 70 shows and released 945 unique episodes, which have been collected by 109,000 unique wallets.

Dune - @socialgraphventures

  • Monthly agreement revenue grew 175x from $800 in January to $140,000 in August across more than 30 active shows.

Dune - @socialgraphventures

  • About 60% of revenue came from the top three shows. Adam Levy's Mint led with a 49% share, generating $448,000, while Coop Records ranked second with an 8.8% share ($81,000).

  • Trading Highlights: One of the most popular podcasts right now is Terminally Onchain with YB, launched by Hypersub. In this episode, podcast host nonlinear.eth discusses with YB about YB’s venture capital background and how he used Hypersub to become an on-chain writer and monetize his audience. This episode was minted 6,000 times and generated $11,500 in protocol revenue, which was split between Pods and podcasters.
