Key points:
Australia now has nearly 1,200 Bitcoin ATMs, up from 73 two years ago, making it the third-largest market in the world.
Concerns are growing over the potential misuse of these ATMs for money laundering and scams, prompting regulatory scrutiny.
Local banking restrictions and a strong gambling culture are driving growing demand for Bitcoin ATMs in Australia.
According to Bloomberg, Bitcoin ATMs have increased on the continent so rapidly that Australia is now one of the fastest-growing markets for cryptocurrency kiosks.
Australia's Numerous Bitcoin ATMs on the Rise
Data from Coin ATM Radar indicates that Australian Bitcoin ATMs have approached the 1,200 mark, a far cry from the 73 recorded two years ago, putting the country in third place globally, after the United States and Canada. US-based Bitcoin Depot plans to add more than 200 ATMs in Australia pending regulatory approval, a sign of further growth.
Bitcoin ATMs actually allow people to exchange cash for cryptocurrency, usually by depositing it into a digital wallet or withdrawing physical money from cryptocurrency sales. Despite this developing trend, the machines have also been at the center of debate. Proponents believe that ATMs create better access to cryptocurrencies and help include more diverse groups of people in finance.
On the other hand, critics point to money laundering and scams as major risks. The UK and Singapore have banned cryptocurrency ATMs, and Germany will begin regulating their use.
Banking restrictions boost demand for cryptocurrencies
While the rise in the number of Bitcoin ATMs first appeared in North America, the rise of kiosks in Australia has been driven by North American providers. As noted by Angela Ang, senior policy advisor at TRM Labs, regulators in Australia consider cryptocurrency ATMs to be a vulnerability to money laundering. Local police in Australia have described how criminal proceeds could be laundered into digital assets through an ATM and then become effectively untraceable.
Despite these concerns, demand for Australian Bitcoin ATMs continues to rise as the net around digital asset exchanges tightens locally and there is a strong interest in alternative financial instruments.
