Charles Hoskinson defends Hydra as Cardano DeFi expands.
Cardano ( ADA ) co-founder Charles Hoskinson has refuted claims that Hydra, a layer 2 scaling solution for the Cardano blockchain, is unsuccessful.
In an October 5 video on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Hoskinson revealed how Hydra has changed over the past three years and that measuring network activity based on transactions per second (TPS) alone may be misleading.
According to him, one Cardano transaction can include many outputs, one of which is a block containing 384 outputs in just one transaction. He says:
“Cardano is not a TPS system. It is a transaction-by-transaction system, and each of these outputs can signal more complex elements such as scripts and proofs, beyond just the raw transfer of value.”
Hoskinson further outlined that Hydra has developed middleware for developers to build compound applications (dApps) for blockchain network chains. This, Hoskinson explained, is in line with Cardano's broader plans to support on-chain and off-chain applications such as NFTs and decentralized exchanges (DEX).
He says:
“So what happened over a three year period was Hydra pivoted a little bit and pivoted inward, let's create some middleware that would be very easy for you as a developer to plug into your application, working with Plutus to help get a lot of the complicated logic that shouldn't be run on the main network but run on other networks.”
