The Southern District Court of New York sentenced 3 of the 5 defendants in the AirBit Club case, a cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme:
- Scott Hughes: 18 months in prison for money laundering 💸
- Cecilia Millan: 5 years in prison as senior promoter of AirBit Club
- Karina Chairez: 1 year and 1 day in prison as senior promoter of AirBit Club
🔸The scheme was launched in late 2015 and promised guaranteed daily returns from cryptocurrency mining and trading. However, these operations were never carried out and the investors' $100 million ended up in the hands of the founders and promoters.
🔸Despite user complaints since 2016, the fraudulent scheme remained active until 2020.
🗣️ US Attorney Damian Williams highlighted that those convicted played a key role in perpetuating the AirBit Club pyramid scheme.
