今年 8 月 17 日 Scroll 官方宣布發布測試網的最後階段 Sepolia,離主網上線只差最後一步,究竟它有什麼特色?是否會有代幣空投呢?

What is Scroll?

Scroll is a second-layer scaling solution for Ethereum based on ZK-rollup and is compatible with EVM (zkEVM). It aims to solve the current scalability issues of Ethereum, increase transaction speed and reduce transaction costs.

ZK-rollup achieves high transaction speed and low transaction cost by compressing the transaction data on the Ethereum main network into smaller data packets and using zero-knowledge proof to verify the validity of the transaction. The Scroll main network is expected to be launched soon. It will be launched in the third quarter of this year.

What is zkEVM?

Simply put, zkEVM is an EVM-compatible virtual machine that supports ZK-rollup technology. Its full name is zero-knowledge Ethereum virtual machine.

  • Zero-knowledge proof (ZK): An encryption technology that can prove that the user has indeed mastered certain information or completed a certain calculation without revealing the real information.

  • ZK-rollups: Commonly known as Zero Knowledge Rollups, as the name suggests, the Rollups link is performed through zero-knowledge proof verification.

  • Due to technical limitations, early ZK-rollups only supported simple token exchange and other operations, were unable to execute smart contracts in Solidity, and were not compatible with EVM. Only a limited number of tasks can be processed.

  • zkEVM was born to facilitate smart contracts using zk technology on Ethereum and EVM chains, and also provides a new way for developers.

  • Therefore, the currently popular ZK-rollups projects are moving towards the goal of zkEVM, so that DApps and smart contracts that also use EVM can be migrated seamlessly without modifying the code.

Due to the wide variety of zkEVM solutions, Vitalik has previously mentioned different levels of zkEVM and mentioned the main 4 differences. For details, please refer to the article "The Key to Ethereum's Scalable Future: 6 Potential Projects on the zkEVM Track

Scroll network features

Scroll uses ZK-rollup technology to achieve the following functions:

  • High compatibility: Layer2 solution optimized specifically for Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). It can be directly compatible with existing Ethereum smart contracts and DApps, making it easier for developers to access.

  • Higher efficiency: Transaction data is compressed through zero-knowledge proof and uploaded to the chain, improving transaction speed and reducing costs.

  • Strong privacy: Using zero-knowledge proof technology, information such as the sender, receiver, and transaction amount of the transaction can be hidden to enhance transaction privacy.

  • High security: Scroll’s assets are stored on Ethereum Layer 1, which has the security of the Ethereum main network. At the same time, ZK technology also prevents security risks such as transaction fraud.

  • Layer 2 Mining: Scroll has a mining mechanism that encourages nodes to generate zero-knowledge proofs, which can avoid the maximum extraction value (MEV) problem and enhance the security and fairness of the network.

Compared with other zkEVM networks, Scroll mainly uses a hierarchical zero-knowledge proof system, which can efficiently verify the validity of transactions without exposing real data, and allows dApps to run on Layer 2 more easily.

How Scroll works

Simply put, the steps are:

  1. Users deposit assets into Scroll's smart contract and lock them on the Layer1 blockchain (such as Ethereum).

  2. Users conduct transactions on Scroll’s Layer 2 network and generate corresponding proofs using zero-knowledge proof algorithms.

  3. Scroll regularly packages and submits these proofs to the smart contract of Ethereum Layer1 for verification.

  4. Layer1 smart contracts verify whether these zero-knowledge proofs are valid. If the verification passes, the transaction is confirmed.

  5. Users can withdraw assets on Layer2 back to Layer1 through smart contracts at any time.

The whole process is very convenient for users. Users only need to interact with Layer2 and enjoy a high-speed and low-cost transaction experience during the process.

This Layer2 + Layer1 synergy mechanism enables Scroll to have the security of the Ethereum main network and the great scalability of the blockchain, so that the user experience can be optimized!

For more detailed operating principles, you can refer to the official documentation written by Scroll.

Scroll token airdrop?

The currently popular Layer2 networks Base, Mantle, opBNB, Polygon zkEVM, etc., have a relatively low chance of issuing airdrops due to restrictions on issued tokens or related policy factors.

Scroll does not have these restrictions, so the opportunities for airdrops are relatively large. Since the Scroll mainnet will be launched in the third quarter of this year, users can interact with each other during the Sepolia testnet to increase the chance of airdrops. If you want to try it, you can try to interact with the Scroll key ecological projects provided below. interactive.

How to cross-chain to Scroll Sepolia test network

Scroll released Sepolia, the final stage of the test network, on August 17 this year. The detailed steps are as follows:

  1. Go to the Scroll portal.

  2. Link wallet.

  3. Added Ethereum Sepolia and Scroll Sepolia test networks.

  4. Go to website 1 or website 2 and enter the wallet address to receive the test ETH (both require registration, sometimes the registration fails, if it fails, please try another one)

  5. Go to the official cross-chain bridge, select Deposit to Scroll, and cross-chain the test token to the Scroll Sepolia test network.

  6. Start operating related ecological projects.

Note that it will take about 10 minutes to cross-chain the test token from Ethereum Sepolia to the Scroll Sepolia test network, so users are asked to wait patiently.

Scroll Ecology

The Scroll ecosystem is currently in the final testnet stage. Due to the characteristics of EVM, well-known DeFi protocols have been deployed, such as Uniswap, Stargate, Orbiter Finance, etc. Therefore, the projects introduced below will be more focused on Scroll or protocols based on the zk ecosystem:

Zada Finance

Zata Finance is a cross-Rollup decentralized exchange (DEX) created based on Scroll, allowing users to exchange tokens between different Rollup networks.

SpaceFi

SpaceFi is a DeFi center focusing on the zk Rollup network, with decentralized exchange, NFT, liquidity mining and Launchpad functions.

Ghost

Since there is little information on the lending protocol in the Scroll ecosystem, Aave, the most popular platform on the market, is recommended for lending interaction. It is currently online on the Sepolia test network (remember to turn on the test mode when operating).

EtherWar

The full-chain war game built on Scroll and opBNB does not currently support Sepolia and only supports past testnets.

Omnisea

Omnisea is a full-chain NFT market based on LayerZero. Sepolia’s testnet commemorative NFT is distributed here (has expired) and it is recommended that users can test the creation of Scroll NFT on it.

Scroll Name Service

Domain name service on the Scroll chain, where users can register domains with the .scroll suffix.

in conclusion

Generally speaking, although the zk rollup project takes a long time to develop, it also brings speed and security, bringing greater protection to users, and these projects will finally be gradually implemented this year or next year.

With the start of Scroll's last testnet, it means that there is only one step away from the mainnet launch. Is there a way for this zk rollup project to compete with other zkEVMs such as zkSync, Polygon zkEVM, Linea, etc.? Or is it just another overvalued project? Let’s see if Scroll can meet the market’s expectations!
