Claude, a 74-year-old retiree living in Istres and Binance user, shares his experience of more than a year and a half in the world of crypto. Find out how he got into this new financial adventure and what it means to him.
Hello Claude! Can you introduce yourself in a few words?
Claude: Of course! I am 74 years old and I spent 23 years of my life in the Air Force, mainly in the telecommunications field. I was seconded on operations to Chad in 1988 and I was also selected for a mission to the Kerguelen Islands in 1990. After leaving the army in 1992, I worked as a network manager at the DGA at the CEV d'Istres until my retirement in 2016. My hobbies include sports, such as tennis, volleyball, mountain biking, and running, which I practiced intensely after the age of 62.
How did you get into the crypto world?
Claude: My interest in crypto started when I started looking into the stock market in February 2022. I learned the basics of stocks, ETFs, and different order types. However, I realized that Boursorama did not offer cryptos. That’s when a pétanque colleague told me about his crypto investments. Unfortunately, he was using an app that I found too complicated. I wanted to have better control of my investments.
How did you choose a platform to buy cryptos and how long have you been active on this platform?
Claude: I did extensive research before choosing a platform to trade cryptos. I compared the fees, the variety of cryptos available, as well as the features offered by different platforms. After watching explanatory videos on Binance, notably those from Hasheur, I decided to register on the platform. I have been active on Binance since April 2022.
Why did you choose Binance to trade cryptos?
Claude: I chose Binance because after examining the alternatives, notably the transaction fees, the cryptos listed, the fact of being able to make Earn, it seemed to me to be the most complete platform. Although it may seem complex for beginners due to its many features, the Binance tutorials and YouTube videos made it much easier for me to understand how it works.
What does Binance mean to you?
Claude: With my relatively limited experience in the crypto world, I consider Binance a platform that I would recommend to a newcomer. It offers many opportunities for investing and trading cryptos, and the educational resources available on the platform are very useful for beginners like me.
How do your loved ones react to your interest in crypto?
Claude: My wife prefers that the money be used for various purchases, but she does not criticize my investments, which I consider reasonable. My sons observe my involvement in the crypto sector with astonishment, and it is likely that one of them is interested in it, especially since he is leaving for Canada.
How has crypto impacted your life?
Claude: Crypto has profoundly transformed my life, pushing it towards new financial horizons and opening the doors to a complex but fascinating world. My journey began when I became interested in the stock market in February 2022, which took me deep into the world of stocks and ETFs. I began to learn about financial terms and concepts that were previously unfamiliar to me, like market order types and limits.
Then, my curiosity led me to explore cryptocurrency. This new adventure revealed to me a totally different financial world. I had to learn new terms, like blockchain, altcoins, BTC, ETH, The Merge, and many more. This dive into crypto fascinated me so much that I even bought books to deepen my knowledge.
I filled a 180-page notebook with notes and watched dozens of educational videos from personalities like Julien, Hasheur etc. My engagement in crypto is only growing, and the more I learn, the more I thirst for understanding.
Do you have a crypto-related story you want to share with the Binance community?
Claude: A funny anecdote concerns my 8 year old grandson. When he saw me looking at crypto trading charts, he asked me why I was looking at these “mountains”. This shows how mysterious cryptos can seem, even to the youngest!
Are there any crypto-related services or products that have changed the way you live?
Claude: Several products and services related to cryptocurrency and Binance have had a significant impact on my daily life, bringing benefits and possibilities that I would never have imagined before. Let me explain some of them to you:
Limit Buying: The ability to place buy orders at specific prices has allowed me to better manage my investments and take advantage of market fluctuations to my advantage.
Flexible Earn: Flexible staking provided me with an opportunity to earn interest on my cryptos by holding them on Binance, which is a passive way to increase my funds.
Binance Card: The Binance Card is a real revolution. It allowed me to pay for my daily purchases, whether at the gas station, at the bar, at Decathlon, or in a DIY store, using cryptos with cashback, which is very practical.
Launchpool: The concept of Launchpool has allowed me to participate in promising cryptocurrency projects, like Cyber and SEI recently, by providing liquidity and earning rewards, which adds an interesting dimension to my experience of crypto.
All of these products and services have transformed the way I manage my finances and opened up new opportunities. Cryptocurrency is no longer just an investment, it has become an integral part of my daily life.
If you could launch a crypto-related product, what would it be?
Claude: Given my limited knowledge of the crypto field, it is difficult for me to imagine a specific product. However, I am convinced that innovation in this sector is far from over.
What is the best trade you have made in crypto, and would you do it again?
Claude: My best move was to implement DCA in the summer of 2022. This progressive investment method allowed me to manage market fluctuations with less stress, and I would do it again without hesitation.
What do you like most about the crypto community?
Claude: I appreciated the opportunity to meet the Binance team in Marseille, even if I was cheated for my fake “Binance” t-shirt that I had bought on the internet. I also enjoyed interacting with others in the region, as well as the educational resources provided by Binance Academy. The solidarity and recommendations of more experienced members of the community are also very valuable.
Another time, my Binance account was blocked due to the need to provide information about the origin of my funds. I had to use chat for the first time and ask a human for help to resolve the issue, it was quick and very efficient.
Do you think crypto is the future?
Claude: I think crypto adoption will grow exponentially. Global events, such as the pandemic, high interest rates, and the growing adoption of crypto ETFs, will help boost the sector. Regulations are being put in place like Mica, and many institutions are interested in crypto. I am convinced that crypto is part of the financial future.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in crypto?
Claude: Take the time to inform yourself before getting started. Read, compare, watch crypto videos and follow news channels. Take notes, only invest what you can afford to lose, and consider DCA as a good way to start. Above all, don't panic.
What do you think are the most rewarding aspects of being involved in the crypto world?
Claude: Being a pioneer in the financial sector of the future is extremely rewarding. At my age, I continue to discover new horizons and learn. Crypto has opened the door to exciting new worlds for me, and I have never been more hungry to learn and understand. Crypto proves that there is no age for discovery. I'm not going to walk on the moon, but I've already set foot in crypto... there's no age for discovery.
