DeFi Education Fund (DEF) filed an application with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) requesting the cancellation of a patent owned by a company called True Return Systems, which it described as a "patent troll" aimed at profiting from patent lawsuits.

The patent, granted in 2018, contains claims regarding the process of “connecting off-chain data to a blockchain.” DEF claimed that True Return featured technology that was not new at the time the patent was granted, noting existing similar technologies such as IPFS, Sia, Storj and Swarm.

DEF initiated the filing with the USPTO to defend its ability to use and develop open source software, stop True Return's possible plans to sue crypto projects, and assist in the legal defense of MakerDAO and Compound. True Return has the right to respond to the petition within an optional three months. After six months, the USPTO must decide whether to begin reviewing the patent to decide whether to revoke it.
