The X (Twitte) account of Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, was hacked and caused victims to lose more than $691,000 through malicious links.
In a September 9 post on X, Dmitry Buterin, Vitalik's father, announced that his son's account had been compromised:
“Ignore this post, clearly Vitalik has been hacked. He is working to restore access.”
The post he was referring to has been deleted. It was published on Buterin's account claiming to celebrate the arrival of “Proto-Danksharding Ethereum coming soon”.
The hacker shared a malicious link to a freely available commemorative NFT token, enticing victims to connect their wallets before stealing all of their funds.
As a result, this incident led a user on platform X to claim that they had suffered the loss of their CryptoPunk NFT collection.
At the time of publication, the current floor price of CryptoPunk NFT is 46.99 Ether, or approximately $76,837.
Blockchain investigator ZachXBT actively informed his 438,200 followers about the hacker's activities, causing Buterin's followers to lose $691,000 through the malicious link.
One user on X suggested that Buterin may not have implemented adequate security measures for his X account.
“I hate to be the one to say it, but Vitalik must take responsibility for his poor performance and compensate those affected,” the user noted, before implying that he believes the oversight Buterin's assassination led to the attack:
“It is still possible that Vitalik was hacked if and only if someone at X internally compromised the account or if he was directly coerced by a criminal threatening violence. I highly doubt that's what happened. Most likely, this is a SIM swap game.
However, ZachXBT has disputed these allegations, asserting that Buterin's high status makes him vulnerable to various types of attacks.
