Yesterday, I watched some interviews with Li Ka-shing, and for some reason, tears welled up in my eyes. It might be because his experiences with family, life, struggle, hardship, and growth were so touching.

In his interviews, his parents and mother appeared frequently, but even at his advanced age, he could not help but feel emotional when recalling the past.

His father, Li Yunjing, was very smart since he was young and was always the top student in school, but his family was too poor to afford his education, so he was later hired as a local primary school principal. Li Ka-shing said that his father had the greatest influence on him.

"When I was seven or eight years old, it was very cold one night. I woke up in the middle of the night and saw my father grading papers meticulously. I didn't disturb him, but it left a very deep impression on me. At that time, Chinese teachers and intellectuals worked very hard but earned very little."

"One Saturday afternoon, I excitedly pulled my father aside and said, 'Look, English is not that difficult to learn. I'll read to you.' After I finished reading, I saw his expression, how can I put it? He was very sad. He knew that his son liked to study, but the family environment did not allow it at that time."

In 1939, when Li Ka-shing was 11 years old, in order to avoid the bombing of Japanese planes, his family walked for 11 days to Hong Kong to join his uncle.

"When I was 12 years old, one day, I hugged my mother's feet and cried. My mother asked me why I was crying, but I didn't tell her why I was so sad. My parents didn't know why I was crying until they left this world. It was just a momentary feeling. My father used to be a primary school principal in his hometown. Most people respected him very much, but coming to Hong Kong was very different. From that day on, I knew clearly that my future destiny would be to study and have a future. Although I didn't go to a regular school to study, I bought books when I had a little money. A man should be self-reliant. If my father could live another 10 years, he would see that his son would not have to worry about him anymore."

In 1941, when Li Ka-shing was 13 years old, the Japanese army occupied Hong Kong, the Hong Kong dollar depreciated, and life became more difficult. At this time, his father had contracted a serious lung disease. Recalling the most painful time, Li Ka-shing said, "There is only one thing that can comfort me to this day."

The day before my father passed away, he had nothing to say to me, but he asked me if I had anything to say to him. If you think about it, you will feel sad. I told him confidently and comforted him: "Our family will definitely live well."

Later, his father passed away and left him a will: "It is better to work on yourself, be a man of integrity; do not be discouraged when you are frustrated, and do not get carried away when you are successful."

After the death of his father, a fellow villager of 14-year-old Li Ka-shing who was good at fortune telling said to his mother: "Your son has dull eyes and a thin frame. He may not be a great person in the future. If he keeps to himself, he will be troubled all day long." It’s okay to work hard and make a living, but he doesn’t have the blessing to be brilliant.”

"My mother had just lost her husband. These words made her feel sad. She put her disappointment aside and comforted and encouraged me, saying: Ah Cheng, fate is unpredictable. God will definitely treat kindness well. No matter how difficult it is for hard-working people, as long as they can rely on their family, it will be good. Of course, I believe in my mother, but I believe in myself more. I asked my mother to rest assured, but I have more confidence in myself. I believe in my heart that only the future created by my own hands is the only destiny that can be followed."

Perhaps, it was this self-confidence, or perhaps it was his father's advice to "help others, not yourself", that made him reject his uncle's kindness in sponsoring him to complete his high school education. He went to his uncle's watch company as an apprentice and left after a year, working as a salesman in a hardware factory, a plastic tape factory, and a toy factory.

During this process, he always insisted on self-study. He recalled: "When I was young, I looked modest on the outside, but I was actually very proud inside. Why was I proud? When others went out to play, I was studying. We were colleagues with very little education, but you saw that they kept the same every day, while I was getting more and more knowledgeable. Everyone was doing the same work, but I was constantly striving for progress. So when I started my own business, I warned myself that if I was proud, I would hit a wall one day."

Everyone gets different things from looking at Li Ka-shing from different perspectives. Some people think that he is just a hero made by the times, some think that he just married a rich wife, and some think that he just got lucky in buying land. Some people call him a profiteer, and some say that he is using public sharing.

However, I will see that he values family, study, and personal struggle, and I will see the intersection between his personal efforts and the mysterious fate.

The most valuable thing in life is moving forward.
