According to TechFlow, Electricity of Laos (EDL) announced that it will no longer supply electricity to cryptocurrency mining operations in Laos. The notice issued by EDL on August 24 pointed out that Laos experienced drought and hot weather in the first six months of 2023, resulting in high demand for electricity, and hydropower stations had difficulty generating enough electricity.
EDL also said that 95% of the country's electricity is generated by hydroelectric plants through its system. EDL plans to supply electricity locally and provide a large amount of electricity to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to supply the Thai grid during the upcoming dry season in 2024.
Meanwhile, Lao authorities said a cryptocurrency mining operation had failed to repay its debts.
