Thailand has launched the WORPT app, allowing foreign tourists to deposit USDT or USDC and, after converting it to Thai baht, scan local PromptPay QR codes to pay. Merchants still receive baht; they do not accept cryptocurrency directly.
Currently, it supports only the Ethereum ERC-20 network. The conversion fee is 1.5%, the wallet balance is capped at 100,000 baht, and cash withdrawals are not available. Applicants must also be non-Thai tourists with NFC-enabled passports. Is this the mainstreaming of crypto payments, or just another layer in a stablecoin currency-exchange tool?
