Swift has joined an association for an Ethereum token standard. Are banking rules about to move on-chain?
Swift, the messaging network used by banks around the world, has joined the ERC-3643 Association. The news came from an Apex Group press release dated November 4: Apex Group, Chainlink, T-REX Network, and the ERC-3643 Association have developed an on-chain bond compliance framework aligned with Swift standards.
What is ERC-3643? Anyone can transfer an ordinary token. But before transferring a token issued under this standard, it first asks: are you eligible to hold it? Identity, investor eligibility, and transfer rules are built into the asset itself.
According to the press release, the roles are:
1. Apex Group provides regulated asset services and will work with Swift to apply these standards to on-chain bonds and their lifecycle management.
2. Chainlink provides cross-chain transfers (CCIP), a compliance execution engine (ACE), and price data (Data Streams).
3. T-REX Network lets assets be deployed once and distributed across multiple chains.
4. Swift standards ensure that on-chain asset data aligns with the conventions used in traditional markets.
The selling point is that compliance rules can be written once and reused across different chains, instead of being recreated for every chain.
One thing to keep in mind: the press release describes a demonstration of an “initial bond implementation.” It doesn’t mean Swift itself is issuing tokens, or that any bond is already trading on-chain at scale.
To put it plainly: “decentralization” and “check your ID first” have ended up in the same framework. What do you think RWA will look like in the end?
