Bitcoin vs. gold: Gold-backed ETFs hit a record with 4,189 tonnes
Gold has just set a new record while Bitcoin continues to draw capital as well. The ETFs backed by the yellow metal held 4,189 tonnes at the end of August after $18 billion in inflows over a month. Their assets now total $615 billion. In the same period, U.S. Bitcoin ETFs attracted around $3.52 billion. Two rare assets, but two markets of very different sizes.

Gold reaches 4,189 tonnes as Bitcoin accelerates
Gold’s rally was swift. In July, global ETFs still held 4,068 tonnes. One month later, an additional 121 tonnes had joined the funds, bringing the total to 4,189 tonnes.
The move extends a shift already visible in early August, when gold reached a six-week high while Bitcoin was stuck. Investors injected $18 billion into gold ETFs in August. It is the second-best month ever recorded in value by the World Gold Council.
Europe contributed approximately $7.9 billion. North America follows with around $7.7 billion. Asia adds $2 billion. The metal’s rise did the rest. Gold gained roughly 13% in August and ended the month near $4,563 per ounce. With capital inflows and price appreciation, assets under management by the ETFs jumped 16% in a month to reach $615 billion.
Bitcoin also saw a solid month. U.S. spot ETFs received approximately $3.52 billion—their best monthly result in 2026.
