🔷 Crypto X-Ray #4:
$ZEC — a third of coins in the shadows, price −25%
In short: Zcash offers private transfers by choice. The coin has lost ~25% in a month, and the NU7 upgrade is coming up. The network is alive, but an upgrade ≠ automatic growth.
The conflict. About 29% of all ZEC issued is held in shielded pools, which shows people want privacy. But the price is ~$1136, down 81% from its 2016 ATH ($5,942). There’s usage—but what does the holder get out of it?
Under the hood. NU7 cuts block time from 75 to 25 seconds and introduces the NSM mechanism. 60% of fees won’t be burned; they’ll be temporarily withdrawn, with returns starting in 2031. Don’t count on deflation.
Who’s in. ZODL has raised $25M+, and Grayscale has a ZCSH product listed on NYSE Arca.
The backstory. In January, the ECC team left after a conflict with the board. Does it smell like a loss of confidence? More likely, it’s a governance issue. Plus, 22.3K ZEC in Sprout could get stuck after v4 is switched off.
The downsides. No staking or dividends, mining continues to issue coins, and privacy coins face regulatory risk.
Verdict. I wouldn’t chase the news. The market may have already priced it in.
What to do. Watch and wait. We’re waiting for official confirmation of the November 5 date. Below $1080, the scenario weakens.
Not for those looking to earn income by holding.
