The Rising Influence of Artificial Intelligence in MusicThe landscape of the music industry is continually evolving, with various technological innovations taking center stage in recent years. From NFTs to Web3 technology, the industry has witnessed transformative trends, but in 2023, it’s artificial intelligence (AI) that is stealing the spotlight.  Warner Music CEO Robert Kyncl believes that AI will play a significant role in the music industry in the coming year. He emphasizes the need to embrace this technology and adapt to its presence. Kyncl highlights the importance of affording AI-generated content the same protections as traditional copyright, although he acknowledges that this process will take time. Legal complexities of AI-generated music The legality of using AI to mimic artists’ voices in music has become a pressing concern. A YouTuber recently released a song using AI-generated imitations of Drake and The Weeknd’s voices, sparking a debate within the music industry. Musicians fear unauthorized cloning of their voices and are actively seeking legal remedies to address this issue. The emergence of startups like YourArtist·AI, which offers voice bots imitating real stars like Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars, adds to the complexity of this matter. Users can engage with these bots, and for a fee, the bots will sing songs in the voice of the chosen artist, raising questions about the potential misuse of such technology. AI in streaming music platforms Spotify CEO Daniel Ek’s stance on AI-generated music is nuanced. While he does not intend to ban AI-made music, he emphasizes the importance of obtaining artists’ consent before using AI to impersonate them. The Rise of Specialized AI Chatbots: Navigating the Data DilemmaIn an era marked by the rapid evolution of AI technology, the dominance of giants like ChatGPT is being challenged as specialized AI chatbots gain traction. This shift promises to make AI chatbots more useful for specific industries and regions, but it also raises critical questions about data, synthetic data, and the future of AI development. The specialization of AI chatbots As the AI landscape evolves, AI chatbots are becoming less generic and more specialized. The key to their enhanced utility lies in the data they are trained on. Traditional AI models like ChatGPT cast a wide net, absorbing vast quantities of data from books, web pages, and more. However, this broad approach is gradually giving way to a more focused selection of training data tailored to specific industries or regions. This specialization trend offers significant advantages. AI chatbots trained on targeted datasets can provide more accurate and relevant responses to users. For instance, an AI chatbot designed for the healthcare industry can offer specialized medical advice, while one focused on a specific region can provide localized information and insights. The shifting value of data To comprehend the evolving AI landscape, it’s crucial to understand the changing value of data. Companies like Meta and Google have long profited from user data by selling targeted advertisements. However, the value of data to organizations like OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is somewhat different. They view data as a means to teach AI systems to construct human-like language. Consider a simple tweet: “The cat sat on the mat.” While this tweet may not be particularly valuable to advertisers, it serves as a valuable example of human language construction for AI developers. Large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4 are built using billions of such data points from platforms like Twitter, Reddit, and Wikipedia. This shift in the value of data is also changing the business models of data-rich organizations. Platforms like X and Reddit are now charging third parties for API access to scrape data, leading to increased costs for data acquisition. The emergence of synthetic data As data acquisition costs soar, the AI community is exploring synthetic data as a solution. Synthetic data is generated from scratch by AI systems to train advanced AI models. It mimics real training data but is created by AI algorithms. However, synthetic data presents challenges. It must strike a delicate balance—being different enough to teach models something new while remaining similar enough to be accurate. If synthetic data merely replicates existing information, it can hinder creativity and perpetuate biases. Another concern is what’s called the “Hapsburg AI” problem. Training AI on synthetic data could lead to a decline in system effectiveness, akin to inbreeding in the Hapsburg royal family. Some studies suggest this is already happening with AI systems like ChatGPT. The importance of human feedback One reason for ChatGPT’s success is its use of reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF), where human raters assess its outputs for accuracy. As AI systems increasingly rely on synthetic data, the demand for human feedback to correct inaccuracies is likely to grow. However, assessing factual accuracy, especially in specialized or technical domains, can be challenging. Inaccuracies in specialist topics may go unnoticed by RLHF, potentially impacting the quality of general-purpose LLMs. The future of AI: Specialized little language models These challenges in the AI landscape are driving emerging trends. Google engineers have indicated that third parties can recreate LLMs like GPT-3 or LaMDA AI. Many organizations are now building their own internal AI systems using specialized data, tailored to their unique objectives. For example, the Japanese government is considering developing a Japan-centric version of ChatGPT to better represent their region. Companies like SAP are offering AI development capabilities for organizations to create bespoke versions of ChatGPT. Consultancies like McKinsey and KPMG are exploring training AI models for specific purposes, and open-source systems like GPT4All already exist. The potential of little language models In light of development challenges and potential regulatory hurdles for generic LLMs, the future of AI may be characterized by many specialized “little” language models. These models might have less data than systems like GPT-4 but could benefit from focused RLHF feedback. Employees with expert knowledge of their organization’s objectives can provide valuable feedback to specialized AI systems, compensating for the disadvantages of having less data. These developments signify a shift toward highly tailored AI solutions that cater to specific industries, regions, and purposes. The AI landscape is undergoing a transformation marked by the rise of specialized AI chatbots and the challenges posed by synthetic data. While giants like ChatGPT continue to dominate, the future of AI may indeed be characterized by many smaller, purpose-built language models designed to excel in specific domains. As this evolution unfolds, striking the right balance between data, synthetic data, and human feedback will be critical to ensuring the continued advancement of AI technology.

The $33 Trillion US Debt Wake-up Call: Why Bitcoin Matters Now More Than Ever This year, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have faced challenges amid increasing pressure from the Federal Reserve on financial markets. With the U.S. national debt skyrocketing to an astounding $33 trillion, concerns are mounting that the United States might be caught in a debt downward spiral, setting off a self-reinforcing cycle that the Federal Reserve might find difficult to break free from.  While the impasse in negotiations to raise the U.S. government’s debt ceiling has left markets on edge, some analysts diverge from the consensus, cautioning that a potential resolution may bring about positive consequences for the crypto market. It’s worth noting that the U.S. national debt now exceeds the total market capitalization of cryptocurrencies, which stands at $1.12 trillion, by a staggering factor of about 30. That would mean that the government would need all the money in about 30 crypto markets to settle its debts. US Debt is Adding Pressure to the Markets Recently, the U.S. national debt, which represents the money borrowed by the federal government for operational expenses, reached an unprecedented $33 trillion, according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The Covid-19 crisis and subsequent lockdowns have greatly accelerated government spending in recent years. Concurrently, the Federal Reserve has initiated a rapid series of interest rate hikes to rein in rampant inflation, increasing rates at the fastest pace since the period preceding the 2008 global financial crisis. Hence, the Fed is now allocating a larger portion of its budget solely for interest payments on the national debt. Projections indicate that these interest costs will triple from just under $400 billion last year to nearly $1.2 trillion by 2032, necessitating further borrowing to cover the escalated interest expenses. Bitcoin advocate Max Keiser asserted that raising interest rates won’t quell inflation; it will fuel even higher inflation. He added that the destructive cycle is relentless, and we have entered a dangerous debt spiral, expressing his belief that all assets will devalue to zero compared to bitcoin. This week, Jamie Dimon, the CEO of the Wall Street powerhouse JPMorgan, cautioned that individuals should brace for a “worst-case” scenario from the Federal Reserve. That came after Fed Chair Jerome Powell recently stated his readiness to continue raising rates to combat inflation. Arthur Hayes, the former CEO of the crypto exchange BitMex and a renowned Bitcoin trader, predicted earlier this month that the price of Bitcoin could surge if the Fed persists in raising interest rates. Hayes explained that when rates go up, the government pays more interest to the wealthy, who spend more on services, boosting GDP even further. He added that bondholders might seek higher yields in more lucrative “risk assets” such as Bitcoin. Bitcoin Presents Itself as a Lucrative Alternative  As the U.S. debt accumulates at an alarming pace and central bank policies erode the dollar’s purchasing power, the argument for Bitcoin as an alternative store of value, immune to government interference, gains even greater credibility. A potential U.S. debt default could set off a chain reaction that might directly impact the value of Bitcoin and other digital currencies. That would occur as confidence in the U.S. dollar wavers, prompting investors to potentially divest from traditional holdings and seek alternative assets to hedge against the fiat economy. Digital currencies are particularly appealing in this context due to their decentralized nature, providing a degree of insulation from the instability experienced by fiat currencies. On a broader scale, a U.S. debt default could trigger a surge in inflation because Treasury securities would become less appealing and no longer seen as entirely risk-free. This shift would further bolster Bitcoin’s position, as its fixed supply ensures it cannot be devalued by inflationary measures, distinguishing it from fiat currencies. Many seasoned investors hold the conviction that the increasing institutional interest in Bitcoin, including significant developments like a $500 billion Japanese bank’s establishment of a “Bitcoin Adoption Fund” and BlackRock’s proposal for a spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF), coupled with the upcoming reward halving event, could propel the Bitcoin market to unprecedented heights in early 2024. Despite the temporary resolution of the U.S. debt ceiling, the prevented shutdown and the postponement of default concerns until 2025, the issue of America’s trillion-dollar debt persists, with no immediate solution. While the initial raising of the U.S. debt ceiling might redirect money from alternative assets towards stocks and bonds, this dynamic may not hold in the long run. As economic headwinds, such as potential banking crises and an impending credit crunch, continue to challenge the economy, the long-term bullish case for cryptocurrencies is anticipated to strengthen. Following a period of consolidation, Bitcoin has today demonstrated positive indicators by reaching its previous swing high amidst market uncertainty. On closer examination of the daily chart, Bitcoin initially appeared to be somewhat stagnant around the $25K mark, offering little clarity on its future trajectory. However, a bullish divergence between the price and the RSI indicator and robust buying activity near the $25K support level generated the necessary momentum. That resulted in a surge, intending to reclaim the 200-day moving average, currently around $28K.

Navigating the Complex Landscape of AI Security and GovernanceIn recent developments, the global AI landscape has seen figures like Sam Altman taking on a prominent role, potentially influencing the regulatory aspects of AI development. This shift in focus towards regulatory capture has raised questions about the stance of organizations like OpenAI on open-sourced AI. However, this article goes beyond the realm of AI development to delve into the critical issues surrounding AI security and standardization. In the rapidly evolving cyber threat environment, where automation and AI systems are at the forefront, it is crucial to emphasize the role of security automation capabilities. Consider the simple act of checking and responding to emails in today’s world, and you’ll uncover the intricate layers of AI and automation involved in securing this everyday activity. Organizations of significant size and complexity are increasingly reliant on security automation systems to enforce their cybersecurity policies effectively. Yet, amidst this reliance on automation, there’s a crucial aspect often overlooked—the realm of cybersecurity “metapolicies.” These metapolicies encompass automated threat data exchange mechanisms, attribution conventions, and knowledge management systems. They collectively contribute to what is often termed “active defense” or “proactive cybersecurity.” Surprisingly, national cybersecurity policies frequently lack explicit references to these metapolicies. They tend to be implicitly incorporated into national implementations through influence and imitation rather than formal or strategic deliberations. These security automation metapolicies hold immense importance in the context of AI governance and security because AI systems, whether purely digital or cyber-physical, exist within the broader cybersecurity and strategic framework. Hence, the question arises whether retrofitting existing automation metapolicies is suitable for shaping the future of AI. The need for unified cybersecurity metapolicies One significant trend is the integration of security practices from the software-on-wheels domain into various complex automotive systems. This extends from fully digitized tanks, promising decreased crew size and increased lethality, to standards for automated fleet security management and drone transportation systems. This evolution has given rise to vehicle Security Operations Centers (SOCs) that operate along the lines of cybersecurity SOCs, utilizing similar data exchange mechanisms and security automation implementations. However, blindly retrofitting existing means into the emerging threat landscape is far from adequate. For instance, most cybersecurity threat data exchanges rely on the Traffic Light Protocol (TLP), primarily serving as an information classification system. However, the execution of TLP and any encryption mechanisms to restrict distribution are often left to the discretion of security automation system designers. This highlights the need for finer controls over data sharing with automated systems and ensuring compliance. Another example of inconsistent metapolicies can be seen in the recent proliferation of language generation systems and conversational AI agents. Not all conversational agents are large neural networks like ChatGPT; many have operated for decades as rule-based, task-specific language generation programs. Bridging the gap between legacy IT infrastructure and emerging AI automation paradigms presents challenges for organizations undergoing digital transformation.

Artificial Intelligence Revolutionizing Heart Disease PredictionCardiovascular disease is a pervasive and lethal health concern in the United States, claiming the lives of countless individuals each year. According to the American Heart Association, it stands as the leading cause of death in the nation. The urgent need to predict an individual’s likelihood of experiencing a future heart attack has driven doctors to explore cutting-edge technologies, harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize heart disease risk assessment. Traditional methods of diagnosing heart disease, such as stress tests, have their limitations. These tests can identify blockages that exist at the time of the examination, but they may not provide insight into future risks. This is where AI steps in, offering a promising solution to predict the likelihood of future cardiac events. For individuals like Bob Freiburger, the adoption of AI in cardiac healthcare is a beacon of hope. Bob’s personal connection to heart disease, having lost a sister to the ailment in her 40s, prompted his interest in this technology. He recognized the value of AI in providing a comprehensive assessment of his heart health. AI’s impact on preventive cardiac care Leading the charge in this healthcare revolution is cardiologist Dr. Richard Chazal, who explained how his practice has integrated AI into its diagnostic arsenal. “The artificial intelligence program that we’re utilizing looks at plaque and categorizes it into different types, as some forms of plaque pose a higher risk than others. It goes a step further by measuring the plaque down to the cubic millimeter,” Dr. Chazal elaborated in an interview with WINK. Traditional stress tests can indicate the presence of blockages during the test but may not provide a holistic view of plaque accumulation or the risk of future heart attacks. By employing AI to analyze CT scan images, patients and doctors gain invaluable insights into where plaque is accumulating and its potential to lead to a future myocardial infarction. Dr. Chazal emphasized the significance of this advancement, saying, “We’ve identified a number of people who were at high risk for developing a heart attack in the not-too-distant future, and in virtually every case, they were unaware of this.” The statistics concerning heart disease in the United States are sobering. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that someone in the country experiences a heart attack every 40 seconds. Given these alarming numbers, the integration of AI into cardiac care could be a game-changer in preventing future heart-related tragedies. Bob Freiburger’s experience with the AI program yielded reassuring results; he was identified as being at a low risk for heart disease. However, he understands the profound importance of knowledge in managing one’s health. “Knowing that that could be me if I didn’t know the condition of my heart gave me a tremendous level of comfort,” he shared. The integration of AI into cardiovascular health not only offers patients peace of mind but also empowers them to take proactive measures to mitigate their risks. Armed with precise information about plaque buildup and its potential consequences, individuals can make informed decisions about their lifestyle, diet, and medical interventions. AMD and Intel Forge Alliances With FAANG Giants to Challenge Nvidia’s AI DominanceIn the fast-paced world of technology investment, one question looms large: Can Nvidia sustain its incredible growth and high margins? Over the past two quarters, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has displayed remarkable performance, but doubts persist about its sustainability. If artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators continue to grow at a 50% annualized rate over the next five years, Nvidia’s stock could still be considered a bargain. However, if rival forces begin to erode its AI dominance, its sky-high price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio might not be justified. At a recent industry conference, Lisa Su, the CEO of Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD), a key competitor to Nvidia, expressed skepticism about the concept of moats in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. She stated, “I’m not a believer in moats when the market is moving as fast as this.” This sentiment suggests that Nvidia’s current lead in the dynamic AI space may not be as secure as it seems, despite its multiyear head start in AI accelerator hardware and software development. But what’s happening beyond mere rhetoric? How are tech giants like AMD, Intel, and FAANG companies (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google) planning to challenge Nvidia’s supremacy? Nvidia’s CUDA moat: Real or perceived? Many investors believe that Nvidia’s dominance in AI is not just due to its hardware innovations but also its CUDA software stack. CUDA was created to enable the programming of graphics chips for the parallel processing of regular data, making AI training and inference possible. Software moats can be formidable, as seen with Microsoft’s Office suite, which includes PowerPoint, Excel, and Word. Once it became the standard for business operations, it became challenging for competitors to introduce a competitive product. This phenomenon is known as the network effect. However, Nvidia’s CUDA might be more vulnerable to disruption than Microsoft Office. The prohibitive cost of Nvidia’s GPUs, which currently sell for $30,000 or more per chip, creates a strong incentive for large cloud platforms and AI customers to seek competitive alternatives. In contrast, Microsoft Office is relatively affordable for enterprises. Moreover, AMD and Intel, along with tech giants like Meta Platforms, Alphabet, and Microsoft, are actively contributing to open-source alternatives. These massive companies possess significant developer resources and are well-positioned to create viable multichip platform alternatives for the AI era. We are still in the early stages of the AI boom, which began in earnest just a year ago with the introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. If these competitors move swiftly, a robust open-source competitive platform could emerge before Nvidia’s moat solidifies further. RocM and SYCL: Competing with CUDA Both Intel and AMD have presented their CUDA alternatives at recent AI and data center chip presentations. They emphasize the benefits of open platforms that allow their in-house software to be ported to different GPUs while integrating with existing open-source AI software. Prominent open-source platforms like Pytorch (Meta), Tensorflow (Alphabet), Deepspeed (Microsoft), and Hugging Face (AI startup) are prime examples of this approach. What makes AMD’s and Intel’s software stack intriguing is their portability features. These features enable software developers to migrate programming code written in CUDA to their platforms with minimal recoding. – AMD’s software stack, ROCm, is “mostly open” and optimized for Pytorch and Hugging Face. Importantly, it includes a porting feature for code from other GPUs, likely including Nvidia and CUDA. – Intel promotes an open-source AI programming platform called SYCL, developed by the Khronos Group. SYCL, a higher-level open-source C++ software, allows developers to write code for any accelerator. – Intel also released SYCLomatic, a tool that facilitates porting over 90% of CUDA code to SYCL with only minor tweaks needed. If there’s no moat, It’s a hardware battle While Nvidia has a substantial lead in AI chips, AMD recently unveiled its MI300, featuring a “chiplet” architecture with significant capabilities. Intel’s Gaudi line of AI accelerators has also gained traction, attracting high-profile generative AI startup Stability AI. These competitors will undoubtedly invest heavily in the AI accelerator market, given its rapid growth. The case for Nvidia maintaining its lead in the AI market hinges on the network effects of CUDA. Hardware superiority can be fleeting, as Intel experienced when it lost its lead in advanced chips around five years ago. Therefore, the AI market could potentially accommodate all three companies. Investors, particularly Nvidia shareholders, must closely monitor the AI software competition, as it could determine whether the company continues its dominant growth and high margins or experiences more industry-standard margins in the 20%-30% range historically seen in leading-edge processors. As the tech industry grapples with the rapidly evolving AI landscape, Nvidia faces challenges from formidable competitors like AMD and Intel, backed by FAANG giants. While Nvidia’s CUDA software stack has provided a significant advantage, it is not impervious to disruption. The emergence of open-source alternatives like ROCm and SYCL, coupled with portability features, signals a concerted effort to challenge Nvidia’s AI dominance. While Nvidia’s hardware lead is evident, the battle for AI supremacy may ultimately depend on the adaptability of software and the ability to win over developers. In this fast-paced arena, where technology evolves by the minute, Nvidia, AMD, and Intel will continue to vie for a share of the burgeoning AI market. Investors must remain vigilant, as the outcome of this competition will have a profound impact on the future of AI technology and the companies driving it.

At a recent industry conference, Lisa Su, the CEO of Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD), a key competitor to Nvidia, expressed skepticism about the concept of moats in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. She stated, “I’m not a believer in moats when the market is moving as fast as this.”

This sentiment suggests that Nvidia’s current lead in the dynamic AI space may not be as secure as it seems, despite its multiyear head start in AI accelerator hardware and software development.

RocM and SYCL: Competing with CUDA

Both Intel and AMD have presented their CUDA alternatives at recent AI and data center chip presentations.

If there’s no moat, It’s a hardware battle

While Nvidia has a substantial lead in AI chips, AMD recently unveiled its MI300, featuring a “chiplet” architecture with significant capabilities.

AI’s Energy Use, Carbon Emissions, and Environmental Impacts UnveiledArtificial intelligence (AI) has undeniably brought both convenience and challenges to various industries. While AI has made significant strides in fields like healthcare and astronomy, its environmental impact and potential harm in other sectors raise questions about its overall benefit. The complex interplay between AI technology and its effects on the environment is prompting a call for more research and transparency. Professor Teresa Heffernan from Saint Mary’s University, an AI researcher, highlights concerns about the environmental footprint of large language models (LLMs) like Google’s Bard and ChatGPT. These models, celebrated for their text-based capabilities, consume substantial computing energy during both training and use, contributing to their carbon emissions. Transparency is a key issue, with Heffernan pointing out a lack of openness regarding data and processes. Assessing the environmental impact of AI, a recent report by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) focused on the carbon dioxide emissions generated during LLM training. The report identified three critical factors: model training time, hardware power usage, and carbon intensity from the energy grid, which together determine the dynamic power consumption of LLMs. The research revealed staggering carbon emissions associated with training AI models. For instance, Microsoft’s GPT-3 emitted the equivalent of 502 tonnes of CO2 during training, equivalent to the emissions of 304 homes in a year. Similarly, DeepMind’s Gopher, a 2021 LLM, released 352 tonnes of CO2 during its training. Importantly, carbon emissions continue when AI models respond to queries, contributing to ongoing environmental impacts. The varied environmental impacts of AI Applications Smaller algorithms like Bloom, though seemingly less impactful, still produce 19 kilograms of CO2 per day during development. This becomes substantial when deployed in user-facing applications like web searches, leading to millions of daily queries. Beyond carbon emissions, AI systems also deplete freshwater reserves as they generate heat during operation, necessitating cooling. Cornell University’s research indicated that Google’s data centers consumed 12.7 billion liters of fresh water in 2021, while a Microsoft GPT-3 training center used around 700,000 liters. Even a simple interaction with AI models like ChatGPT can be likened to the consumption of a 500-milliliter water bottle for cooling purposes. Concerned about AI’s environmental impact, CTVNews.ca reached out to companies mentioned in the report. Microsoft, for instance, emphasized its commitment to sustainability, pledging investments in research to measure energy use and carbon impact while improving efficiency and relying on clean energy. Microsoft’s commitment to environmental responsibility While the report focuses on LLMs, other AI applications also exert environmental pressure. David Rolnick, a computer science professor at McGill University, stressed that the impact of AI depends on its application. AI can be a tool for good when used in applications like monitoring deforestation but can exacerbate environmental issues, such as in oil and gas exploration. Rolnick likens AI to a hammer, emphasizing that its impact depends on how it’s wielded. Many AI algorithms are energy-efficient and play essential roles in various industries, from manufacturing to finance.

FTX Exploiter Strikes Again a Day After Moving Millions in Ether The FTX accounts drainer has once again siphoned off another 7,500 ETH, equivalent to $12.62 million, linked to last year’s apparent manipulation of the FTX exchange. That marks the second movement of ether from a wallet associated with the FTX exploiter after approximately 2,500 ETH, valued at slightly over $4 million, was moved yesterday after a year of dormancy. The funds were divided into two portions and subsequently underwent several transactions; 700 ETH were transferred using the Thorchain Router, while around 1,200 ETH were routed through the Railgun privacy tool. The $600 Million Suspicious FTX Hack On November 11, 2022, accounts associated with both FTX and FTX US were hacked and drained of funds. This unfortunate event occurred mere hours after the company declared bankruptcy and the subsequent resignation of its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, from the helm of the crypto empire he had overseen. At the time, the attacker managed to get away with over $600 million worth of ether. Former FTX general counsel Ryne Miller, in a tweet that has since been deleted, mentioned that the exchange was implementing precautionary measures to safeguard funds from other FTX wallets. Following this incident, John J. Ray III, the CEO and Chief Restructuring Officer of the FTX Debtors, responsible for managing the FTX bankruptcy proceedings, stated that approximately $323 million in various tokens were stolen from their international exchange, with an additional $90 million taken from their U.S. platform, according to reports. These recent transactions took place shortly before Bankman-Fried’s trial in the U.S., scheduled to address charges of fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud, which federal prosecutors filed in December of the previous year. Bankman-Fried has entered a plea of not guilty to all charges. At the same time, some former executives from FTX and Alameda Research have admitted guilt and are expected to provide testimony against their former leader. FTX Exploiter’s Identity is Still a Mystery The exact details of how the funds were drained from the exchange and the identities of those responsible remain shrouded in mystery. However, a lot of speculators think that SBF is involved. Accounts linked to the collapsed exchange and its U.S. counterpart were emptied shortly after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Following the exploit, approximately 21,500 ether (equivalent to $27 million at the time) were converted into the stablecoin DAI.  Meanwhile, Bankman-Fried is slated to face trial next week, having maintained his plea of not guilty to all charges. In his opening statements, SBF is not permitted to attribute FTX’s collapse or operations to the actions of its lawyers, as ruled by the federal judge overseeing his case. However, he may still attempt an “advice-of-counsel” defense at a later stage. Bankman-Fried’s defense team had previously informed the Department of Justice and the court that they intended to argue that the exchange’s legal counsel played a role in certain decisions made by the company. However, Judge Lewis Kaplan, in an order today, noted that presenting this argument without providing specific details could potentially confuse or bias the jury. While external counsel cannot be mentioned in the opening statement, Bankman-Fried’s attorneys may seek to raise the issue later, provided they notify both the judge and the DOJ in advance and without jurors present.

While external counsel cannot be mentioned in the opening statement, Bankman-Fried’s attorneys may seek to raise the issue later, provided they notify both the judge and the DOJ in advance and without jurors present.

Hacked Nigerian Crypto Platform Patricia Raises New Funds Amid Customer Outrage — Can They Win Ba...Nigeria-focused crypto platform Patricia has moved aggressively to secure funding to quell the dissatisfaction among its user base. Weeks after admitting to a loss of $2 million worth of customer assets due to a cyberattack last year, the firm aims to use fresh capital to refund its aggrieved customers. However, trust seems to be in short supply. In a virtual meeting last Friday, Hanu Fejiro, the company’s CEO, indicated that some financing had been obtained, although specifics about the investment were not divulged. Patricians! It’s time to have your say!Join us this Friday, September 29, 2023, from 1-2 p.m. for an exclusive town hall session where we spill the tea on our Patricia Relaunch, the Patricia Token, and why we need YOU on board! pic.twitter.com/WXv0SYK4fg — Patricia (@PatriciaSwitch) September 26, 2023 Additionally, Hanu Fejiro revealed that Patricia Plus, the company’s app, is currently under beta testing and slated for a relaunch soon. A previously launched version in April led to a financial scramble as customers sought to withdraw their funds en masse. Consequently, Patricia imposed a freeze on withdrawals, further alienating an already skeptical customer base. Controversial debt tokens and legal woes Cryptopolitan reported that Patricia converted its customers’ remaining assets into Patricia Tokens (PTK), described as debt management tokens. This abrupt shift led to an outcry, prompting the firm to issue a detailed clarification regarding these tokens.  Although Patricia has touted its repayment plan as tied to platform profitability, it hasn’t provided a timeline for financial sustainability. Furthermore, Patricia’s management admitted that the repayment plan’s success depends heavily on the new capital raised. Moreover, these debt management tokens haven’t won the confidence of the company’s users. Customers are demanding more transparency, with some even considering legal action. The atmosphere of mistrust is exacerbated by Patricia’s delay in disclosing the cyber breach, affecting its ongoing efforts to secure full customer buy-in. In an echo of global crypto platform Bitfinex’s strategy, Patricia seems to be employing a similar tactic with its debt tokens. Bitfinex, having lost around $72 million to hackers in 2016, also offered its users debt tokens as a liability obligation. However, the key difference lies in the prevailing mistrust and skepticism towards Patricia, which makes the adoption of such a model a risky endeavor. Significantly, the discord among Patricia’s customers extends beyond mere dissatisfaction. An anonymous customer suggested in the virtual meeting that aggrieved users should stage a protest while others are contemplating legal recourse. The company is clearly at a crossroads, facing a trust deficit that fresh funding alone may not bridge. As it prepares for the relaunch of Patricia Plus and touts its new funding, the onus lies squarely on Patricia to demonstrate its commitment to making amends. While the recently acquired funding may be a step in the right direction, whether it can mend fences with a wary customer base remains an open question.

DOJ Wants Investors to Testify in the Upcoming FTX TrialFederal prosecutors in the upcoming trial against former crypto executive Sam Bankman-Fried are seeking to call former FTX customers, investors, and employees, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ). The aim is to have these individuals testify about their experiences and expectations regarding FTX and its handling of funds. The DOJ intends to present testimony from customers and investors who held FTX shares to provide insights into how they expected FTX to manage their funds. DOJ wants investors to discuss their interactions with SBF Additionally, cooperating witnesses will be called upon to discuss their interactions with Sam Bankman-Fried and their understanding of his statements and actions. The testimony from these witnesses is crucial as it pertains directly to the disputed issues in the trial and sheds light on how reasonable individuals would have interpreted the representations made by Bankman-Fried regarding FTX’s treatment of customer assets and other matters. The Department of Justice (DOJ) plans to call both retail customers who transferred substantial assets, often tens of thousands of dollars, and institutional clients who moved significant sums, often tens of millions of dollars, to FTX with the expectation that the exchange would serve as a custodian for these funds. While the specific witnesses were not identified in the documents, it was noted that the customer witnesses are expected to testify for less than 30 minutes each and will require minimal, if any, exhibits. The prosecution did reveal the names of three cooperating witnesses who had pleaded guilty to charges related to the exchange and would testify in the trial. These witnesses are former FTX Chief Technology Officer Gary Wang, former FTX Head of Engineering Nishad Singh, and former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison. Another former FTX executive, Ryan Salame, had also pleaded guilty to charges but had not agreed to testify as of the most recent update. FTX customer-1 and the challenges of testifying from abroad Additionally, the DOJ intends to call at least two more witnesses who will testify under a grant of immunity, although their identities have not been publicly disclosed. One of the prospective customer witnesses referred to as “FTX Customer-1,” resides in Ukraine, making it challenging for them to travel to the United States due to both legal and logistical reasons. Given the ongoing war in Ukraine, the customer needs government permission to leave the country. Furthermore, arranging travel for this witness would take approximately three days each way and require multiple forms of transportation. To address these challenges, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has requested permission from the judge to allow this witness to testify via video conference, with supervision by a U.S. government official, possibly at the embassy. However, the defense has expressed disagreement with this motion. The government faces significant hurdles in arranging for overseas FTX customers to testify. Some of these hurdles include coordinating with local authorities, managing time zone differences, and handling potential travel delays, all while incurring substantial costs. Despite these challenges, the government is actively working on arrangements for some overseas FTX customers to travel to New York to provide in-person testimony. Sam Bankman-Fried’s trial is scheduled to begin next week, with jury selection starting on October 3. Opening statements could commence as early as October 4.

Worldcoin Records Massive Success in ChileWorldcoin, a controversial project that scans people’s eyeballs in exchange for cryptocurrency, has garnered attention in Chile, where over 200,000 individuals have participated. While some view this as a concerning step towards a dystopian future, others see it as an opportunity for easy money. Carlos Santibañez, a 29-year-old Chilean, had his eyeballs scanned in September 2022 primarily out of curiosity when the WLD token had no monetary value. Since then, he has earned over $150 in WLD tokens. Worldcoin rewards users for sharing private information One of the notable features of the project is that Worldcoin’s data collection is less invasive than that of other companies. This has helped participants feel they are benefiting from sharing information. Santibañez also mentioned the high-profile investors supporting Worldcoin as a factor that influenced his decision to participate. Currently, individuals receive 25 WLD tokens (approximately $42) for having their eyeballs scanned. In some countries like Chile, this amount can be significant, given the minimum wage of $512 (or 460,000 Chilean pesos). Earning 8% of their monthly wage simply for a quick eye scan becomes an enticing proposition. Worldcoin has found success in emerging economies with economic struggles similar to Chile’s. For example, Argentina, grappling with high inflation rates, experienced a surge in sign-ups, with one registration every nine seconds on a particular day in August. In Kenya, where the minimum wage barely surpasses $100 per month, more than 350,000 registrations were reported. However, Kenyan authorities later banned Worldcoin’s operations due to privacy concerns. In Chile, some participants are joining simply for the novelty of it. A 25-year-old student, Javier Santelices, admitted to not fully understanding cryptocurrencies but decided to give it a try when he encountered a Worldcoin stand. He emphasized that since most of his data is already collected by other companies online, this opportunity doesn’t feel much different. Economic incentives and changing the perception of crypto Remarkably, Worldcoin hasn’t faced widespread regulatory challenges in Chile, despite the substantial number of participants. The nation is known for its economic freedom and growing tech sector, leading in the Latin American Artificial Intelligence Index. The fact that 1% of the population has signed up for Worldcoin has surprised some observers. Francisco Díaz, a Chilean anthropologist specializing in DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations), expressed curiosity about the public’s perception of cryptocurrencies. He highlighted that people initially dismiss the crypto world as a scam, only to later line up for what they perceive as “free money.” Díaz has been actively involved in talentDAO, a research collective studying these types of organizations for several years. He mentioned the evolution of DAOs, moving away from the old formula of issuing governance tokens without considering their necessity. Regarding Worldcoin’s success in Chile, Díaz believes that the economic incentive plays a significant role. This is because when one considers the country’s minimum wage, the earnings are not insignificant. Worldcoin’s unique approach of scanning eyeballs in exchange for cryptocurrency has gained traction in Chile, attracting participants for various reasons, including the lure of monetary rewards, novelty, and the belief that data sharing is already prevalent in the digital age. Despite concerns in some quarters, Worldcoin has not faced significant regulatory challenges in Chile, possibly driven by the country’s economic climate and interest in emerging technologies.

Ethereum Supply Surges Amid Gas Price DeclineThe supply dynamics within the Ethereum network have experienced significant fluctuations amid a turbulent year for DeFi (Decentralized Finance), NFT (Non-Fungible Token) sales, and meme coin trading. Depending on the specific time frame examined, the token’s supply can appear either deflationary or inflationary. Every week, Ethereum tends to become scarcer, while when looking at a yearly perspective, it issues more tokens than it burns. This is in relation to the factors driving these changes in the token’s supply dynamics, why its transaction fees are decreasing, and what the future holds for the network. Ethereum’s supply directly tied to gas prices In August 2021, Ethereum introduced EIP-1559 (Ethereum Improvement Proposal 1559), which introduced a fee-burning mechanism. Since then, the network’s supply has been closely tied to gas prices. When gas prices rise, more Ethereum is burned in transactions, and vice versa. This fee-burning mechanism set the stage for the token’s transition from a proof-of-work to a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, commonly known as the Ethereum 2.0 upgrade. This transition significantly reduced the issuance of new tokens, by as much as 90%, leading some to hail Ethereum as “ultrasound money.” However, this label has come into question as gas prices have declined, along with transactional volume. Currently, transaction fees for sending the token across the network stand at around $0.28. According to data from Etherscan, the cost of a trade on Uniswap has dropped to $2.76, a substantial decrease from its $4.17 price in early September, and a level not seen since the FTX collapse in late 2022. Chris Martin, the head of research at Amberdata, has identified some key factors contributing to the decline in gas prices. Future of the crypto market and the factors influencing gas prices Cris Martin points to the Ethereum Foundation’s focus on scaling the network through Ethereum 2.0, which has led to cost reductions and enhanced security as the first factor. Martin also highlights the growth of Layer-2 scaling solutions, which have diverted significant transactional volume away from the mainchain. Martin also mentions the lack of a clear narrative, something that the broader crypto market has grappled with recently. He notes that many participants are eagerly awaiting the next major development or trend, and the current market environment offers fewer opportunities compared to 2021. Julio Barragan, the director of education at Blocknative, a Web3 tool facilitating transaction management, believes that the current state of gas prices is temporary. Barragan asserts that when transaction volume increases, competition for block space will intensify, automatically driving up gas prices. However, Barragan acknowledges the uncertainty regarding the future of Ethereum’s gas prices, particularly with the gradual acceptance of ERC-4337, also known as account abstraction. This upgrade aims to make crypto wallets as user-friendly as email. Barragan points out that it remains unclear how account abstraction and the wider adoption of Layer-2 solutions will impact gas prices and, consequently, Ethereum’s supply. He concludes that while lower fees can attract more users and activity to the blockchain, an influx of users can also lead to increased congestion, creating a complex and evolving landscape for the token’s supply dynamics. Ethereum’s supply dynamics have experienced significant shifts, driven by changes in gas prices, the transition to Ethereum 2.0, and the adoption of Layer-2 scaling solutions. While the current state of lower gas prices may be temporary, the long-term impact of developments like account abstraction remains uncertain. Ethereum’s journey toward a more scalable and user-friendly network is ongoing, and its supply dynamics will continue to adapt to evolving market conditions.

Google Set to Unveil Pixel 8, 8 Pro, and Pixel Watch 2Google’s annual Made by Google event is fast approaching, with tech enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the launch of the latest Pixel devices and the Pixel Watch 2. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, October 4th, at 10 a.m. Eastern Time (ET) and will take place in New York City, with live streaming available on Google’s YouTube channel. CNET will provide in-person coverage of the event, ensuring that every detail of the new hardware is brought to the public eye. Pixel 8 and 8 Pro unveiled Google has been building anticipation for the event by teasing the upcoming Pixel 8 and 8 Pro smartphones. These new additions to the Pixel lineup are touted as featuring “the most advanced Pixel cameras yet” and harnessing the power of Google AI to enhance user experiences. While Google has revealed the physical appearance of these phones, they have intentionally kept the focus on design rather than revealing all the capabilities. A leaked video on 91mobiles shared by Kamila Wojciechowska offers a glimpse into the new camera features. These features are said to be driven by “Google AI controlled by you.” The video showcases impressive capabilities, including Video Boost for enhanced video stabilization, exceptional night mode photo processing in low light conditions, and improved audio isolation for video recording.  Notably, the video demonstrates a unique AI feature allowing users to replace blurry subjects in photos with clear, in-focus versions, showcasing Google’s innovative approach to AI photography. In terms of specifications, both the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro are expected to feature a 48-megapixel main camera. However, they differ in their secondary camera setups. The Pixel 8 comes with a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera, while the 8 Pro boasts a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera with a new macro focus mode.  Additionally, both phones sport a 10.5-megapixel front-facing camera, but the 8 Pro’s selfie camera stands out with autofocus, a feature not present in the Pixel 8. The 8 Pro, following the tradition of pro models, includes a third rear camera—a telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom. Display and performance In terms of display, the Pixel 8 is equipped with a 6.2-inch screen, slightly smaller than the 6.3-inch display on the Pixel 7. Google has also enhanced the refresh rate on the Pixel 8’s screen, increasing it to 120Hz from the Pixel 7’s 90Hz. Both phones are expected to be powered by Google’s Tensor G3 chip, promising improved performance and AI capabilities. One of the most intriguing rumors surrounding the Pixel 8 Pro is the inclusion of a built-in thermometer. Although a video leak on 91Mobiles showcasing this feature has been taken offline, the potential for a contactless thermometer on a smartphone could open doors to innovative health-related applications. While not a first in the smartphone industry, with the 2020 Honor 4 Play Pro featuring a similar sensor, Google’s implementation could bring new possibilities for users concerned about their health and well-being. As for pricing, it appears that the eighth generation of Pixel phones might come with a slightly higher price tag compared to their predecessors. The base model of the Pixel 8 is expected to retail for $699, while the Pixel 8 Pro’s starting price is set at $999. This represents a $100 increase for both phones, signaling Google’s commitment to delivering premium features and experiences to its customers. Pixel watch 2 revealed Alongside the Pixel smartphones, Google has also teased the Pixel Watch 2, which closely resembles its predecessor, the original Pixel Watch. Notable differences include a more streamlined crown design, and a significant upgrade in terms of dust and water resistance, with IP68 certification added to the new model. This enhancement promises durability and usability in various conditions. For eager customers awaiting these new devices, Google has revealed that preorders for the Pixel Watch 2, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro will commence on October 4th, coinciding with the Made by Google event. This provides an opportunity for early adopters to secure their new Google hardware.

Israel Eyes Blockchain Technology to Revamp Real Estate SectorIsrael is keenly considering integrating blockchain technology into its real estate transactions. According to Israeli media, the Israel Land Authority has explicitly called for blockchain experts to delve into possible applications of this technology in the sector. This move aims to address some long-standing issues plaguing the real estate market in Israel, such as high operational fees and time-consuming processes. The vision for blockchain in property management Besides speeding up property registration and license management, blockchain offers promising solutions for smart contract-based sales and purchases. Additionally, the technology could enable the creation of a national property registry on the blockchain. This registry would make it easier to verify property ownership and reduce the risk of fraudulent activity. However, to ensure safety in this new plan, market participants would need the validation of a trusted third party. Hence, while the technology offers increased efficiency, maintaining a secure environment remains a crucial factor. Another intriguing possibility is the tokenization of real estate properties. Tokenization could offer a much-needed liquidity boost to Israel’s real estate market. Property could be divided into hundreds of tokens, allowing investors to buy a fraction of a property rather than making a full-scale investment. This would eliminate many of the intermediaries involved, consequently reducing transaction costs. Moreover, Roi Karo, Fireblocks’ Chief of Risk and Strategy, emphasizes that tokenizing real estate assets could make transactions nearly instantaneous. Transactions could occur directly between parties anywhere in the world. This creates an environment ripe for investment, unlocking new financial avenues for potential buyers. Significantly, Israel is not the only country exploring blockchain technology in real estate. Colombia is developing a similar system, utilizing the XRP Ledger to issue and authenticate property documents without the need for third-party involvement. Israel’s approach to integrating blockchain in the real estate sector is multifaceted. With applications ranging from streamlining property registration to potentially tokenizing real estate, blockchain technology is poised to introduce some important efficiencies into the Israeli property market. However, there are challenges, particularly related to security, that will require careful attention and validation from trusted entities.

FTX Exploit Address Transfers $17M in EtherIn a recent development, an address associated with the FTX exploit, identified as 0x3e9, has seen significant activity, conducting transfers exceeding 10,000 Ether (ETH), valued at approximately $17 million. This comes after months of dormancy for the related addresses, stirring concerns within the cryptocurrency community. A substantial portion of the transferred ETH, approximately 7,749 ETH worth around $13 million, was directed towards the THORChain router and Railgun contract. Furthermore, the exploiter executed a swap involving 2,500 ETH, valued at approximately $4.19 million, converting it into 153.4 tBTC at an average price of $27,281 per token. Background of the FTX exploit The exploit initially occurred on Saturday, September 30, resulting in significant losses of nearly 50,000 ETH. This exploit has raised concerns within the cryptocurrency market and has put downward pressure on the price of Ether, which currently hovers slightly above $1,650. Adding to the current dynamics, the market is eagerly anticipating the introduction of Ethereum futures Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) on Monday, October 2. These financial products are expected to have a notable impact on the cryptocurrency market. Meanwhile, in the world of cryptocurrency exchanges, FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried, also known as SBF, is preparing for his upcoming trial scheduled for October. This trial follows his arrest in The Bahamas and subsequent extradition to the United States, marking several months since these events unfolded. SBF faces a total of seven charges related to fraudulent activities, comprising two substantive charges and five conspiracy charges. Throughout the legal proceedings, the FTX founder has consistently maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty to all allegations. Despite numerous attempts to secure temporary release, Bankman-Fried remains in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center. In a recent development, Judge Lewis Kaplan denied Bankman-Fried’s most recent request for release. The judge cited concerns about the possibility of the defendant fleeing during the ongoing legal process.
