Microsoft’s earnings report may be the most worthwhile one in the AI industry to study lately.

In its latest quarter, Azure cloud revenue grew 48%, beating Wall Street expectations. Meanwhile, Microsoft generated $18.6 billion in free cash flow in a single quarter, nearly $10 billion more than the market expected.

Even after investing $45.2 billion to expand its computing infrastructure, the company was still able to generate substantial cash. This stands in stark contrast to the recent performance of other tech giants.

Google was sold off because of its heavy AI spending, while Microsoft rose more than 3% after hours on the strength of its cloud growth and cash flow. Wall Street is now starting to distinguish which companies can actually make money from AI.

I believe Microsoft’s biggest advantage is its vast base of enterprise customers, which allows it to integrate AI capabilities directly into its existing cloud computing and office software businesses. This is a more competitive business model than relying solely on financing to build data centers.
