I think the most interesting part of BitMine accumulating nearly 5% of ETH’s total supply is not the “6 million ETH” headline.
It is what this move says about how large capital is starting to view Ethereum.
If a public company is willing to make $ETH a core treasury asset and then stake most of that position, this is clearly not a short-term trade.
They are betting that Ethereum will remain a critical piece of financial infrastructure for years to come.
What matters most to me is the supply side.
A large amount of ETH is already locked in staking. If listed companies, funds, and institutions keep buying ETH and staking it as well, the amount of ETH actually available for sale on the market keeps shrinking.
And markets do not need ETH to become “scarce” in an absolute sense for price to move higher.
Demand simply needs to grow faster than the amount of supply willing to be sold.
That said, I do not think BitMine buying ETH automatically means ETH must pump immediately.
One company controlling close to 5% of supply also creates concentration risk. If its strategy changes, it needs liquidity, or it starts reducing exposure, that could create significant selling pressure.
So for me, this is structurally bullish for the long term, but not a reason to FOMO in the short term.
The real question is not how much ETH BitMine has already bought.
The real questions are:
Will they stop once they reach 5%?
And will more public companies start doing the same thing?
If the answer is yes, the ETH treasury narrative may only be getting started.
