Illegal mining has cost Malaysia $1.1 billion
Over the past five years, authorities have discovered 14,000 underground farms that have caused the state electricity company TNB losses exceeding $1.1 billion.
Miners are being searched for with drones and thermal sensors — operators constantly move and disguise their equipment. Just this year, another 3,000 cases of electricity theft have been recorded.
Authorities believe that the schemes are controlled by organized crime groups.
