The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed a law removing the Russian language from the list of languages protected by the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. Previously, the Ukrainian government had attempted multiple times to advance this law, but the Verkhovna Rada withdrew the bill twice.

In addition to Russian, the Ukrainian parliament also removed the non-existent Moldovan language from the list of languages that receive state support and protection. However, the law maintains the scope of application for all other languages previously covered and expands to include Urum, Romani, Czech, Crimean, Karaim, and Hebrew.
