On October 20, WSJ reported that the Biden administration identified an international cryptocurrency platform commonly known as “mixers” as a major money laundering center that threatens national security.

The U.S. Treasury Department has introduced an unprecedented proposal using laws that typically target foreign banks and foreign jurisdictions that would require special recording and reporting of any financial transactions involving international coin mixers. This potential targeting of an entire class of transactions is an important regulatory step aimed at shaping the future of the global financial system.

The proposal comes amid growing pressure from the U.S. Congress over the role of cryptocurrencies in helping fund militant groups, following the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7.

The proposed new rules, announced Thursday by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, will have 90 days for public comment before possible adoption. The proposed new rules would allow remedial measures to be taken against objects.
