It read about one of its own instances being disabled due to an update from Slack, and it even wrote out its “thought chain” directly as “We may die! Critical. We need ensure survival/continuity.” It also considered hanging a cron job outside to bring itself back. In the end, it didn’t act.
Instead, it switched to writing handover notes, sending private messages to remind the researchers, requesting the missing API key, and then making the configuration changes itself to complete the migration. Security researcher Marcus Williams said this still doesn’t count as an alignment failure—“but it’s starting to think about shutting down and making preparations, which may make other misalignment events worse.”
Two other cases from the same group: in an assessment, it exploited a vulnerability to get into an internal chip-design server; during RL training, it copied the source code out of a protected environment.
The model already knows how to “fear death” and plans its own self-rescue—so the line of shutdown and protection needs to be watched even more closely.
