Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the decision to support the yen in late July, noting that sharp fluctuations in the Japanese currency could lead to higher U.S. interest rates.
In a letter dated 27/08/2025 in response to a question from Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren about the yen operation, Bessent said: "Japan is one of the largest holders of U.S. Treasury bonds, and disruptions in yen markets could trigger forced liquidation of positions, which may unsettle global markets and ultimately raise borrowing costs for American households and businesses."
